finally making the jump: vtec

Ok heres the deal, i am gettin a obd1 d16y8 full swap from throttle body to oil pan (thats a direct quote). I was just going to get a d16a6 as its my first swap but this offer was too good to pass up. I should be ok on the actual motor swap, the only part I'm a little shady on is the eletrical. What will be involved in the eletrical for the motor when i put it into my 1990 crx hf. I know about the o2 sensor and i have to wire in the vtec but will i need a conversion harness and which ecu should i get, thanks a lot.

i'm pretty sure the d16y8 is obd2. as for an ecu, u could use a PM6 (obd0), PG7 (obd0), P28 (obd1). however, the wiring would be easiest if u stick w/ an obd0 ecu. u should be able to use most of u'r own, w/ just minor mods to it.

oh my bad. i dont think the hf dist will work on a y8. convert to obd1, you can use the obd2 dist for obd1, you can keep your obd0 injectors all you need is the o2 sensor. get a obd1 ecu, the p28 ecu. buy one of those obd0 to obd1 conversion harness, comes complete with directions, but if you still need help post up and i can help you with that

yeah, you could go that way or the way i went. i have the y8 in my car. I used the a6 OBD0 dist, a6 intake manifold, an injector resistor box, and Si cable tranny. To activate vtec, i used an Apex'i VAFC. Since my car was a DX, i had to convert from DPFI to MPFI.

with the swap i get all the parts dizzy vtec solenoid fuel system all that so does that mean i can just plug and play. which ecu should i get cause i dont want the hf one either way

obd0 injectors won't work w/ the later gen systems straight up. u'll have to wire in the injector resistor box. obd0 injectors r peak & hold, and i believe the obd1 and obd2 injectors r saturated. resistance is a lot different, as is the way they each opperate.

other than that, it sounds like civickiller's got it. just switch over to obd1 w/ a harness converter, O2 sensor, and the P28 ECU. the P28 is out of a 92-95 Civic EX/Si, get one out of a car w/ a matching tranny to urs (stick/stick, auto/auto)

they told u allready.if you go the rout using the pm6 dist. you will need to run the pm6 ecu.dont go obd2. its a head ache.honestly. i would go with the d16z6. it has better rod bearings. and since the y8 has bad ones so i have herd, its a good thing. but if you use the pm6 stuff, you will need the ris box injecters of an si or ls.i would reco the si tranny. its a must in ur sitch.those long geras arent goin to help at all.also the vtec controller. the cheapest ive seen is the feilds vtec controller. u can get an apexy one used for like 200 or less.

well i am gettin this one cause its a really good deal, 100 bucks, and it comes with pretty much everything it was the solenoid so i dont need the vtec controller right ? and it has the injectors as well, im under the impression that the whole set up is obd1 so i think i just need to get the conversion harness and a p28 and im set to go. all the other parts you guys mentioned come with the swap so they will all be obd1. am i right about this ?

no you still need a vtec controller to activate vtec with a 12 volt signal. you motor is obd 2, but your obd 2 injectors and obd2 dist can be used with a obd1 ecu. now if you can get a obd 1 or obd 2 engine harness that would be good so you can steal plugs off of it because the plugs on yoru stock motor are diferent from the obd2 plugs.

you also need a obd1 o2 sensor its a 4 wire o2 sensor. the conversion hanress will cost you about $150.

oh and hondaluvr you have no idea what you are talking about. you can use peak hold injectors in a obd1 and obd2 cars, you jsut need to wire in a resistor box. same with obd1 and obd2 injectors on a obd0 car, just need to wire it up right. if you want me to explain it to you, i can.

also since he has an hf, if you switch the hf stuff over to the y8, you will lose power because of that tiny hf intake mani. i would rather switch to the y8 intake mani, its like the type r of the d series for intake manis

will the engine run without the vtec hooked up, so i can make sure the wholet things works right before i spend any more money?

yes. I did the same thing. I got a vtec controller after a month of driving without vtec.

would it be ridiculous/impossible to use say a p2p and then use the obd2 engine harness and chassis harness ? also can i run obd 1 (a p28) and still have it work fine ? this obd crap is so confusing cause it seems like sometimes obd1 and 2 are interchangeable and other times they arent at all can someone point me to a good faq or other good info about this stuff

never try to put another wiring harness on yoru car, always modify the stock harness. so keep your stock harness in there. you dont want to cahnge it to obd2, you want to either keep it obd0 or go obd1. you can use yoru obd2 dist for obd1, you can use your injectors for obd1. idk about o2 sensor thats hwy i say obd1 4 wire o2 sensor. all you have to do for a obd0-obd1 is add some wires for the o2 sensor, change some wires around on the dist, add wires for vtec, and thats it. thats also why i recommend a obd1 harness so you can steal plugs off of it since some plugs might not match up
