rocker panels
how much of a project is it to replace rocker panels on a 91 cav? also where can i get them

LOL! I just had a collision shop give me an idea of what it would cost, OUTRAGEOUS!!! the rocker peices they order are about $750 a side! You're looking at over $2000. Sucks, I know, both my rockers are rusted all the way through, and I have a hole I can fit my hand through in the trunk and touch my rear tire. I'm looking at $5000 if I do it in a shop. He told me the best way would be to find a good body and let them cut and peice it on to my cavy. With labor being $35+hr. and it would probably take them 20+hrs, it's a little cheaper.
I think the best way to go is do-it-yourself, or find someone with welding skills and get a bunch of sheet metal. Start cutting and welding in new peices. Best of all, you can give it a custom look! Classicrocjunkie: what do you think?

well the best step out of all of this would not drive a car in the winter with salt on the roads... this is why people need to replace their rocker pannels... ever since i've owned this car, during the winter is goes to the car wash manditory once a week to get the salt off. luckily this is the last winter for it... but on yer idea..sure it will work, but you will need to weld to a strudy area where its not all rusted out... if thats not possible... then your SOL on that idea. BUt if is feasible, make the hole into a geometric shape then cut a piece of metal to fix the hole with minial gap.. close to none at all... weld it in place... grind down the welds.. then add bondo.. fill in the low spots.. sand... then primer... my guess that the 20 hrs is ligit... mostly for drying time and sanding...g'luck

I think it's time for your cavy to go down the road if you know what I mean.Even if you do fix it(patch it up)it will not last.The body shop wanted to do it right by replacing them and that would cost more than what the car is worth.Sorry but that's the way it is.

True, however, if you had put over $5000 in a car for maintenance and the only thing that hasn't been fixed was the body, would you fix it, or send it down the road? I'll never get more than $2000 out of it, so why send 3 or 4 grand down the road? It may not be worth much to you or someone else, but to me it's worth MUCH more. Don't think the thought hasn't crossed my mind! When my motor went earlier this year (181k) I decided it was cheaper in the long run to keep the car I have and drop a new (used-95k) 2.2 in it for $600. My only other option was to buy a new (used) car, pay for new tags, change insurance, and dump another $2000 in maintenence when it breaks, oh, plus payments.

Yea,well here you go.Get it fixed right then.New rockers like the shop wanted to do.Too much you say.Do you know the rocker is the strongest part of your structure?Guess what happens when you get into a wreck with rottened out rockers where all the strength was?Easy to figure out.Here is the question,Is your safety worth it?
