odd problem

hello all
It seems as though i have a problem. When i turn off the car the brake lights choose to stay on??? completely independant of anything i'm doing. usually with a hard press or two of the brake pedal they will turn off, thus allowing me to continue on without returning to a dead car.

i have no good idea what is causing this, maybe a bad sensor on the brake pedal, a bad fuse, honestly i'm pretty well lost on this one and work is rather hectic so bringing it to the shop would be rather inconvienent, so if at all possible i would like to fix it myself.

has anyone else had this problem, if so how did you fix it. If not any ideas???

for reference my car is a 2002 hyundai accent gs with about 20,000 miles on it. Thanks in advance.....

Re: odd problem

yep, I had this problem, I took it to the dealership to get it repaired and they said the switch just needed to be adjusted. fine.

here I am like three weeks later and it happens again. before I could lift the brake pedal out with the top of my foot and it turned off, but now it wont. I actually took out the brake light fuse for the night, because I have no way of fixing it myself.

Im really starting to think the dealership sold me a f**king lemon, and I am not pleased. apparently there is a hole in my front exhaust pipe (which they wont tell me the exact name of the part, just that it costs $300 to fix)

((these are two seperate dealerships -the one i bought from is in another city, and the one i get it fixed at is here where i live)_)

Re: odd problem

Get down in the floorboard, and look up at the brake pedal. There is a switch mounted on it. When the button is pushed in, the brake lights go out. All you'll have to do is loosen the switch, and move it towards the pedal until the brake lights go out, then tighten it back down..

Re: odd problem

TRY SPRAYING A LITTLE wd-40 ON THE SWITCH. IT SOUNDS LIKE IT'S STICKING.

Re: odd problem

No, pulling the fuse is OK. On some models, the brake light switch can be repositioned without tools...

Re: odd problem

No WD-40? Well maybe try a little cooking oil, or sex lube!

Re: odd problem

i must admit amirican spec cars are a pain in the arse compared to brittish spec the switch for the break light cannot not be adjusted its just a pressure switch as in pedal down lights on pedal up lights off so i would get some wd40 spray oil spray it on the switch finger it a few times and that should sort it.
