Making a 6.5 fit in a 6 inch hole
Yeah well I got some 6.5 inch RF speakers for the rear of my car and it turns out my car takes 6 inchers (the computer setup to find out how big speakers your car takes told me 6.5). Anyhow I like the ones I got, and don't really want to move to 6 cuz the selection sucks. I am trying to fit the 6.5's in the holes for the sixes and so far I have come this far.
The original holes are insulated with some foam (from a hard drive box I have, not the best, I will probably switch to heavy foam or a few layers of dynamat, although I would hate to be the sucker to pull out the dynamat later) so that the new speakers sit about half an inch up in them (this was because the speakers did not flush with the surrounding metal and only touched in a few places, so the foam is to reduce pressure on those points and reduce vibration some). I will have to drill new holes in the edge of the speakers to make the last screw fit. My question is, is it ok for speakers to be mounted this way, do I risk injuring them this way and is it a better idea to drop down to 6 inchers (puny selection) or even more dramatic whip out the dremel and nibbler? Also the speakers I pulled out I thought were stock, but the are Boston 160 watt max speakers, are these the stocks in honda civics? The front has Eclipse something or others, I though honda used some generic no name brand? Are these names ones to hold on to? Sorry for the long post, thanks for any advice. BTW on an off note I installed my first H/U today myself I Am so happy, and so cut up... damn sharp aluminum.

Congrats on the HU install. But, the speakers you removed are definitely not stock. The factory upgrade speakers are not even close to being that good. Those are some nice speakers you have in your possesion. I would return the new ones you bought and keep the old ones. Unless they are blown or something. Just buy an amp and those shits will sound real nice.

boston makes great speakers. sure they aren't the best but he might wanna try something better you know? maybe he doesn't realize that RF speakers aren't what he's looking for. i have pioneer speakers that to me are good...but i wanna get some better ones. i might buy some sony components thinking they will do better than my pioneers but then really they suck more.
off-topic here...anyone know where i can find focal speakers for cheap? i'm kinda on a budget here. no need for top of the line set. the bottom of the line components will do. how does the full-range focal speakers perform? my current pioneer tweeter is too harsh. |

i don't know much about focal dealers, but what about crystals? cheap and nice warm sound... and i think you get a choice of soft dome ceramic or metal tweets

Turns out they are Boston RX67 speakers and have recieved pretty good review (I have yet to pop them back in and see how they sound with the new H/U) and probably sounded blown before because someone had jammed a rolled up business car in behind one of the cones, and I mean it was in there, which is really odd.
Also they are indeed 6.5 inch and the new RF speakers are touted 6.5 inch as well. That is really weird. I am wondering now if the Fosgates are meant to be mounted up from underneath or what cuz they sure don't fit the way the Bostons did. Anyhow, that's just an update for now and thanks for your advice!! I am currently thinking maybe now that I have what appears to be 2 full sets of not half bad speakers I will mount the extra speakers either into some kickpods or into the sub box or both, I mean why waste the speakers? Specially since my amp will run 500+ watts and I only have 4 100 watt speakers in right now. So I will be running 100 watt speakers at about 70 watts, but that shouldn't be too bad should it? |
