Power Steering Problem

Here is the problem that I have with my 2000 Ford Windstar. The engine revs up when I turn the steering wheel left or right. This is noticable when the Van is in park, or moving at idle speed. This is dangerous when the van is moving i.e pulling into or out of a parking spot as it jumps when I turn the steering wheel. I recentlly noticed squeeking noise when I turn the wheel, and the power steering fluid is black. I drained/replaced the fluid, but that didn't seem to fix anything. I would like to have an idea as to what is wrong with the Van before I take it in for repair.

Best Regards...

Re: Power Steering Problem

I would guess something is wrong with your IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. As your turn your wheels, the power steering pump loads up... causing the engine to instantly slow down. The IAC, along with the PCM and the crank sensor, are supposed to compensate and keep the idle rpm pretty much constant...unless your ps pump is really a basket case.

It will take several ps reservoir changes to get the fluid in good shape... and it never will be "pretty". I change mine at every engine oil change. I use the synthetic blend stuff by Valvoline... tho it probably does not meet Ford spec.

Re: Power Steering Problem

It sounds like your power steering pump is on its last legs. I agree with 12Ounce, it appears that your IAC isn't as flexible as it should be. You may want to pull it off and see if the little plunger is sticking in either direction (it normally sits somewhere in between the open and closed seats).
