all the fe3 info you need

this site has all the info on the fe3 engine.
the fe3 is the best engine for the first gen ford probe gt/gl.
for those who dont know the fe3 is the same engine that fallguy has in his gt, and he's in the 11's if i remember correctly.
now i dont know how to post a link to this site so if someone can can do it please do as it would help many of us first gen owners considering a swap.
just do a yahoo search and type in "fe3 good bad ugly" and it should be the first thing on the list.
its an ezboard post.

Re: all the fe3 info you need

fallguy's car can be seen at www.totalrpm.com/car/572.
unfortunatly I am seeing a lot of people taking the fe3 out of kia sportages while these engines are fe3's they are very weak versions of the engine. and adding a turbo to the kia version is not recomended because the key components(pistons, rods, crank, and cams) just wont hold up under turbo conditions. now you might be thinking "well im not gonna turbo my car so it's ok to put kia's fe3 in my car" well dont expect much performance and durability from your car.
while the kia engine may be a little cheaper than the mazda engine the performance differences are very drastic between the two mazda's cams are more agressive crank and rods are forged and the pistons are hyperautectic. all these parts on the kia are cast.
mazda has 9,4:1 cr in the cat version and 10:1 cr in the non cat version. kia only has 9,2:1 cr.

if you want to know more another great site with all the specs of the mazda fe3 is www.stormpages.com/fe3t/index2.html
this guy drives a 626 not a probe but he does know quite a bit about the fe3.

How much would a typical "garage" charge to install an engine? Also, I often see prices for engines and they say:

Engine Price: $1408
Core Deposit: $200

Whats a core deposit? (Sorry, I've never bought an engine before..., and still trying to learn something about cars :-p)

Re: all the fe3 info you need

ok as far as engine swaps go this is a fairly easy install not much different than replacing the stock engine unfortunatly i myself cant give you a price quote. I had a buddy help me out with mine.

a core deposit or core charge is the price they give you for your old engine. so when you buy the motor this charge will automaticly be added to the price of the engine. once you pull out your old engine you can take it back to them and be refunded your $200. Or keep your old engine and sell it on ebay for more than $200 and make a profit.
