camshafts are an internal upgrade.

i have no clue what manifolds you are talking about. im guessing the exhaust manifolds. exhaust manifolds or the first piece of your full exhaust system. they connect directly to the block and feed the turbos.

Re: manifolds and cam shaft

Manifolds come in to types, Exhaust, and intake (also known as plenums) Exhaust manifolds can be restrictive from the factory and restrict the amount of HP generated by the engine. This is for several reasons I wont go into. But they can be baught or made in a free flowing less/non-restrictive way too. This alows for greater exhaust scavenging from the engine, Less exhaust gas in the combustion chamber, better fuel-air mix in there means MORE POWER! This is one of the better bolt on parts you can get for the money in my oppinion. For a few hundred dollars you can gain several dozen BHP on some cars and increase miliage and over all engine performance with the right choice. Finding the right manifold for your car is a tricky thing. If you are looking at turboed or NA, will it be a emmissions vehicle or will it be a track car. There is a such thing as a to free flowing exhaust manifold where you lose ALL backpressure in the exhaust system, this hurts your scavanging from the combustion chamber and it hurts performance. Well I wont go much further than that for now, I think that gives you a better idea of what they are and what it can do for you.

Intake Manifolds on the other hand are known as intake runners or Intake plenum. Its basically the same part. Its job is to carry the air/fuel mixture to the combustion chamber. It also must help keeping velocity up with that flow and keeping the fuel in suspension(atomized) in the air. Most cases the stock plenum/manifold is fine for most street applications on todays cars, but if you can get to change it it will make a difference on well tuned cars. They often come in different runner lengths and widths and angles, finding the right combo for your car is once again dependant on your application for that car. Go to long of a runner, and you build a truck engine, great low RPM torque, no High RPM HP. But on the other hand go to short of a runner and you end up with a Honda engine, LOTS of High RPM power, no low RPM power. A well tuned plenum on a decently tuned engine will make a 5-20HP difference in performance.

To some it up, in my oppinion the intake plenum and exhaust manifolds are MUST HAVES for any serrious car guy, who wants to make REAL power with his engine. They are also the most over looked and underpriced parts on the market. I hope I helped you out with your question.

underpriced??? i think broke spent close to 2 grand for his exhaust manifolds.

but yeah im with hodo here. they arent a must technically, but they will give you some HP and free up some flow. best buy i think would be Z1's ported exhaust manifolds. http://www.z1motorsports.com

BTW: your gonna have to pull the engine. so this is a must do if your upgrading turbos or downpipes. i see no reason not to while the engine is out of the car.

Re: manifolds and cam shaft

K3 I dont deal with Turbo cars for that reason. I can get a set of good Exhaust manifolds by looking around and asking people at the fabrication shops around her to "duplicate" some from specs off of the websites and pay several hundred dollars, on avg around 300-700. Still not to bad for 10-20 HP.

yeah...z1's ported exhaust manifolds for the TT run $350 if i remember correctly. very good price.

but broke brough some super duper magnificent and highly expensive exhaust manifolds made out of iconel, a strong rare material that can endure the heat. i think they are even produced by greg dupree himself. anyways...they cost about $1800. i will look them up to show them to you. amazing piece of machinery. they added some 40hp, untuned. i think they are worth every bit of their cost. buts that just my opinion.

EDIT: here is a little onfo about the iconel manifolds...http://www.twinturbo.net/net/viewmsg...&msg_id=879836
and here is where you can get them. http://specialtyz.com/manifold.htm

EDIT2: i thought z1 had the ported exhaust manifolds for the TT on their site but i cant find them anymore...

If your going to modify your intake and exhaust you'll get the best gains by porting both the intake and exhaust ports on your heads. By not doing this it's like putting a big carb. on a small port manifold. Defeats it's purpose and only little gains, but done right can acheive 50-100HP at top end. Then if you add the right cam and springs, you'll see a major gain.
Without repeating what Broke has posted in a thread here about building up the VG30DETT or DE, done right your only limited by the amount of money you want to spend or have.
You can do it in stages, and I suggest asking before you start so you don't have to repeat your steps.
