Carbon buildup? Dirty injectors? Try this!
It's BG 44K. Best damn stuff on the planet, IMO. I use to use this in my other car about every 10-15K miles to clean everything out. Well, I didn't realize just how great it was until now. As you all know, the timing was off on my X for a long, long time. Figuring that I had carbon buildup as a result and that was the reason behind my excess engine noise and power loss (or so it seemed), I decided to try the BG in the Xterra to clean things up. All I can say is WOW!!! After 1/2 tank of gas I have a noticeable increase in power and reduced engine clatter. Seriously, my engine runs and sounds sweet...almost like the Nissan engine was yanked and someone dropped a BMW inline 6 in there. Well, maybe that's a bit exaggerated, but it's quite a bit smoother and better sounding. I also expect an increase in gas mileage, but I won't know for atleast a week after I fill up and drive normally on the next tank.
BG 44K is a professional grade fuel additive and not available just anywhere. I get it from my European Car specialist here in the Seattle area. Cost is about $22 per can, but well worth it. I highly recommend it's use on an occasional basis even if your truck seems to be running fine. My mechanic puts it in his Chevy truck every 5K miles. I'll try and get a phone number or something so you guys can track it down locally if interested. If anyone wants some and can't find it, I may be able to arrange something too. Anyway, I'm totally sold on this stuff and am only posting my experiences. Maybe somebody else will think they have lifter noise or whatever and it's really just carbon buildup that can be removed by the BG 44K. later! After looking at the page, you're right. Would be confusing if I didn't know what I was looking for. Atleast i know the 44K is good and I've also used the Supercharge and it's good stuff too, although I wouldn't put it in every tank ($$$ go away fast!).

This seems to have done something...
Well, I lost 2+ MPG back in November. Like ChuckH, my timing was way off (probably from the factory) & I adjusted it about 4-5 weeks ago. Using this BG44K, I gained roughly 1 MPG. So, since I suddenly lost 2+ MPG in November, and this BG44K got me back ~1MPG, then it seems to me that I need a much more thorough cleaning to get back the other 1-1.5 MPG. Maybe I should press the dealer for a fuel injector cleaning on the warranty but I don't have proof of how bad my timing was off (20 instead of 13-17).
I think I 'll try one more treatment w/BG44K & take MPG data for 2-3 more full tanks & decide from there.

Timing off...Did you take it to the dealer to be corrected???
How did you go about checking your timing??? I dont have access to a timing light. That concerns me a bit. Because I'm getting some lifter noise in the morning and a bit while driving.

There's a procedure in the How-to section here.
I picked up some BG44K at Brown's Nissan in Sterling, VA a month or so ago. Can't say I noticed anything after using it, but it's I figure it was worth it regardless. Get any crap out of there... Brent

Lifter noise after oil change
I'm at my witts end with this lifter noise on start up in the morning. I just had my oil changed at the dealer and now it does it every time it's cold! Any suggestions??? Does anyone else have this ailment? I only have 27k on mine. I have a factory oil filter (or at least that's what I think I have if the dealer changes the oil). It only lasts for a second or so. I hate the sound of metal on metal!!!!

I had the same startup clatter (very brief) with regular dinosaur 5w30 and the Nissan oil filter over the last 20,000 kms. Last week I switched to synthetic 5w30 (Mobil 1) and haven't heard a peep since. The motor is noticeably smoother now, I'd recommend going synth to everybody.

I ask cuz I had a 79 Suzuki GS1000 and I was always checking the tappets with feeler guages and it was correctly spaced. But I could hear it, and it bugged me. There was never a performance issue. I too have some noise on start (and even after start) on the Xterra. I have over 50K. I am just wondering if it is really a problem or not.
