4 barrel carborater broken?

I have a 1984 z28 and i jus replaced the engine. I put a 350 in it and used the same carborater that was on the 305 that was originally in it. I wanted to know what i should do because my quad flap isnt opening and when i push on the gas sometimes it feels like somethings braking and no gas gets to the engine then it kicks back up again( gas is getting back in the engine)

u should go and find a nice used Qjet from somebody or even a junkyard and properly tune it. And get rid of that piece of shit. it is worthless and will give problems even if u fixed the carb. That is why we call em "QuadroBogs"

edlebrock makes some pretty good carbs... 600-650cfm would be a good size for a 350...

my brother has a 650 edlebrock and its garbage. the car has a brand new engine under the hood and the carb is bringing her down, we slapped a 650 holley on it that was on my dads 86 blazer and it ran perfect. we have tried rebuilding the E""""""" and new jets and everything and i believe that its just junk from the start. (probally slapped together on a friday)

Re: 4 barrel carborater broken?

if u want a really bad gas mileage go with edelbrock. Original Qjets are much nice and more efficient when properly rebuilt

see another pissed edelbrock! would you like to know were your gas goes????? out your tail pipes, thats how bad it floods my brothers car out. when you go to wal mart or some where and cut it off and go in for a while. you have to hold the gas wide open to get it to start cause its flooded, once we shot 2 fire balls out the back.

edit* if you have a race car a edelbrock would be fine, but not for everyday use

the reason your carb runs like crap is it was the cc qjet..you running the same distributer?...has it ever been rebuilt?...

if an edelbrock is set up correctly...it wont give you any trouble...carb + gas milage?....kidding me?...

i ran a 1406 edelbrock on my 305, not only did it run alot of mid-low 14 sec times...it was a really good carb...

for a race car...you'd go holley...its more tunable

Re: 4 barrel carborater broken?

All three carbs are excellent carbs. Quadrajets and Edelbrock carbs are very efficient, gas mileage etc, with there use of metering rods. However for racing you can't beat the holley type for ease of tuning and variety. If this is for pure street or street strip go with the edelbrock or the Q-jet.
More towards the original question. What exactly is the carb doing? I dont understand your explanation. I assume the quad flap is the air valve secondary. How do you know it is not opening? If you are just stepping on the gas when the car is out of gear the air valve will not open. The air valve only opens at full throttle under load, meaning only while the car is in drive/gear.

The secondaries arent supossed to open when the engine is cold. And its controlled by ur choke. There is a lockout pin for it. That noise you were talking about is nothing more than a plunger noise- it is all normal and you have internal problems with the carb which sometimes are hard to catch.
About Edelbrock: Edelbrock actually produces Qlets and you can by em or buy parts to tune or upgrate your original GM Qjet.
Once againt dont messe with your carb get a good used Qjet unless its just simple problems such crapy gasckets or dirt.
About carbs:there are street carbs like Holley double pumper or one of the more serious Edelbrocks which suite only hardcore engines with lots of hp. Putting one of those on your car will fuck the gas mileage up- too much gas.

Re: 4 barrel carborater broken?

about the flap. This is vacuum conrolled and opens when engine needs extra enrichment or under really heavy load. It is the part that actually gives all the perfomance comparing to 2 bbls.

They are just more complicated then the others. Fixing what you have is the least expensive and you will learn about them along the way. Aftermarkey Qjets are perhaps the most expensive carbs out there. Just do what you want to do.
