2001 Taurus Rear Brake Drum Removal
Hi. I'm having trouble removing the hub/drum so I can get to the wheel cylinder. I removed the wheel and the little metal retainer clips. Been a while since I did drum brakes. Can anyone help? I have a 2001 Ford Taurus - Sedan.
Thanks, Paul Last edited by u00plb7; 11-20-2004 at 05:55 PM. |

Re: Rear Brake Drum Removal
Ok. I figured out I need to losen the brakes...how do I do that? anybody? I found some holes in the back of the plate. Maybe there are screws to losen the brakes? I've tried to find them...can't ....

Re: Rear Brake Drum Removal
I would suggest that you don't do anything to it, sounds like you are on the wrong track. Think of procuring a Chilton book on the car for guidance?

On the back of the drum there will be an oblong plastic insert.
Take that out and get a smallscrewdriver or brake sppon and turn the wheel it will loosen the brakes. Do one at a time so you will be able to see how to put it back together. Mike |

After pulling out the rubber plug you'll need a brake spoon (there's different shaped spoons for different cars). Insert the spoon an move up and down one way you'll head a clicking sound, this is the wrong way the drun will get tighter. If you hear a spring sound your going the right way. The shoe cuts a groove in the drum and creates a lip this is the problem. Sometimes the shoes hang up so lightly tap with a hammer between the studs and shoes should pop back and rust will break loose. this car has anti-lock so if your not adept at this it maybe a good idea to get a manual or help. They work kind of funny if not adjusted right and it's an important saftey feature to be messing with.
