engine started using oil.oil is collecting in the conbustion chamber
my engine started making a clattering noise when i accellerate.either from a stand still or while i am driving and speed up to pass.i pulled the air filter off an checked in the throttle body and found oil.i replaced the pcv valve an made sure it was getting vacum.now i do not know what to check next.does this sound like a major problem.

Is replacing the intake gaskets a major job. I am handy with the wrench but have never done this job before.

Re: engine started using oil.oil is collecting in the conbustion chamber
sounds like the plenum gasket to me.
here is a link to another board wtha discussin about it. http://dodgetruckworld.tenmagazines...replaced_w_pics replacing the plenum gasket isn't that difficult of a job. it is however going to take some time(most repair manuals say around 4 to 5 hours) also, when you go to pick up your new gasket set, make sure that it has all 5 pieces(you should get a new plenum gasket, and the 4 gaskets needed to reinstall the intake manifold.

Re: engine started using oil.oil is collecting in the conbustion chamber
guess I should have posted this part first. your symptoms sound like what my truck did when the plenum gasket blew. the plenum gasket is between the tow pieces of the intake manifold, when it goes bad, it allowes oil to be drawn out of the crankcase and directly into the intake manifold. symptoms usuailly include spark knock(mostly when the engine is under load) , oil usage, oil accumulation in the intake manifold, and combustion chambers.
looking down the throttle, into the intake manifold is one way to check the plenum gasket. if you see oil in the intake, then there is a good chance that the gasket is bad. also, there is a vacume test, with the engine running, remove the PCV valve from the valve cover. also, if there are any other vac lines attatchec to the valve covers, remove them and plug the holes. then, place your hand over the PCV valve hole(the one in the valve cover). with your hand over the PCV hole, if everything is ok, you should feel a slight preasure build. however, if you can feel vacume, then the plenum gasket is blown. if your plenum gasket is bad, there are several options, you can just replace it(and wait for it to go out again), replace the steel plenum pan with a billet one, or upgrade to a M1 intake(all one piece with no plenum gasket)

Re: Re: engine started using oil.oil is collecting in the conbustion chamber
Thanks for the input from everyone on my 98 dodge ram.I was able to replace the intake gaskets an the plenum gasket. The job took a little longer than I would have figured but nevertheless it was a success. My grandfather was a certified mechanic at Bossier Dodge in Bryan,Tx. He was able to supervise the project an refused to lift a wrench unless he had to.
