94 Grand Am key problems

Well, got my 96 Grand am gt fixed, now my 94 Grand am se has key problems. the key will not come out of the key hole...it won't turn back far enough. Also, it shuts off while running because the key thing is messed up. It just turns off if it moves a little.

Anyone? Please?

Re: 94 Grand Am key problems

Your problem is a broken ignition switch this is a very common problem on GM vehicles, You can probably find the switch easily on ebay or from a local junkyard and to give you a idea whats involved in changing this here are directions from a Firebird even though its a different vehicle they pretty similiar for your vehicle although I recommend getting a Haynes or Chliton manual for your specific vehicle before you attempt this. Good Luck.

Re: 94 Grand Am key problems

Same thing happened on my 1986 Chevy astro van. It really sucked because I was getting gas at the time. I went to start after filling up and the key got jammed just before the start position. I had to push it out of the way so others could use the gas pumps. Good thing was that the switch only cost CDN$23.00 at Canadian Tire.

Re: 94 Grand Am key problems

Ok, I had a mechanic friend look at it and he says I need the whole part where the key goes. It is like $175, but his cost since he works at the dealer is $124. Need new keys and all, not the ignition he says. I really, really wish it had been. Thanks for the replys doods.

Thanks, I'll look into that. I've had it fixed since then, but it still acts up.
