88 jeep cherokee.
No tail lights, no side markers front or back, no park light front or instrument panel illumination except flasher ind. and bright light ind.
I do have stop lights and blinkers.

burns fuse in a milli second as soon as i pull the switch half way out
for park lights.

I'ved checked all bulb sockets for loose connections and corrosion and replaced anything questionable. does any one know how I can trace down the short/or cause of this problem when the fuse blows so quickly? My next guess is to jump the headlight switch Am I on the right track?

You got a short somewhere. You might jump the switch first I would look for any wires that are bare also there is a harness connection under the Air filter box that is subject to corrision.

Find a schematic of your park lights. If its blowing the fuse, just as your turning the "P" lights on, good chance that you have a short from the switch to the lights. I know thats alot of wire, but think, "P" lights are seperate at that stage from everything else, only includes the headlights circuit when you turn on the "headlight" portion. I would go through, remove ALL your tail. marker bulbs, get a digital meter, and start reading from the switch going towards the sockets themselves, the key is to find were the split is for the four lights, and find out which leg has the short. Be careful about replacing the fuse and trying it numerious times, could burn something up that way. You know there is a short, now you have to find it. Hope this helps.

I replaced everything on my cooling system. I would have went to
an open system.
