transmission problems

Hi,
I have an 86' T-bird and im pritty sure that the transmission is just about dead. When I put it into gear it feals like the trany is going to fall out of the bottom of the car. Also you can hear it shift when you put it into gear. Shifting is fine after its in gear, but if I stomp on the gas, at a stand still, the front left side (drivers side) lifts up slightly, most likely from whatever tourqe it does have, (and bad suspention...hahaha) you can feel the tranny shift and/or turn with the engine. When it does this it makes a pronounced bang or poping sound. Sounds like mettal beeing his togeather. I was thinking about getting a new tranny, but would a rebuild be a better way to go? I would rather start with fresh parts but a rebuild is fine also. About how much would i have to put down for a good aftermarket tranny (average price) and about the average price for a rebuild. And if there is any other problem that could come up from this please let me know. Thanx...
