Desperate for 93 Sunbird Tranny Answers

I have a 93 Sunbird 3.1 automatic that has 110,000 miles on it and has never give me trouble. My sister was the original owner and it was well cared for.
On Tuesday my wife went to the store and had no problems, and it made no noises then or two days before when I drove it, like I said it was perfect.
She got home, parked, and had to go away four hours later. When she got in the car started and was fine, but would not move in any gear. I tried all gears, and nothing. Trying to move the car it was in park and would not move, however in any gear it was like neutral.
The repair shops are all saying that it needs the transmission rebuilt or a new transmission in it, that "something inside" is shot. The lowest price is $1000.
I just find it so hard to believe that a car with absolutely no warning or prior problems just goes out when sitting in the driveway. They all say the pump is working fine and I have no idea how to verify that or not due to lack of knowledge. It has been to three shops that all say the same. What makes me worry was that one shop told me the news and in the next breath wanted to buy the car from me.
Anyone have ideas, I am desperate!

First for the bad news. Pontiacs are knows for tranny problems. Second more bad news, yes a tranny can go from one minute to another.

If you're not doing the work yourself, just make sure you get a couple of estimates. You can also get the tranny rebuilt. That would probably be the cheapest way to go but make sure you do your homework on the shops you use.

Good luck
