My dad is kinda funny. He may be old, but he still is a racer at heart. Alright, I wasn't in this race, but it is a very cool story that my dad told me when he got home from work. As some of you know, my dad owns a 3000GT SL. It's white, dual catback exhuast, and that's pretty much it. Very loud, sporty and I love it. I myself am trying to keep up with him in my Civic, but as you already know it's no contest for him.
Anyway, he was taking the same route as I do on the way home (We both work at the same place). He was coming over the hill, almost into town, and he noticed a sporty looking SUV. It was none other than the new Porsche Cayenne with the Turbo emlem on the back. Black, real beautiful looking truck with horsepower to throw around. Not sure how much, but I have heard they are powerful. Now he pulled along the side of it, and glanced over at the driver. He put the car into second and began his take off. No longer than a nose ahead did he stand the slightest chance. He heard the SUV grumble and before you know it, it was gone down the hill and already into town. There was traffic, but not too close to where he couldn't slow down and act like he wasn't racing. So he did so, and acted like he wasn't driving, ashamed of the beating he just received. He said it was embarrassing. He never thought it would happen, he lost to an SUV. He didn't know too much about them, but when he came home, he hopped on the computer and researched them right away. Told me the story, and said he wouldn't take anymore cars lightly anymore. It made me laugh to hear him say that, but I can't say anything. I'm sure I would get toasted faster than he did. Anyway, fun story, hope you enjoy. Late... |

If I remember, those turbo Cayenne's are in the neighborhood of 425 horsepower, and its a pretty "light" vehicle as far as SUV's go.. those things are nothing to gawk at.

Re: 3000GT meets an SUV worth losing to...
See that's what I don't get...what the hell is the point of having a SUV going 165 or running 12s...this obsession with making everything faster and more powerful is getting ridiculous in my opinion.
When you have 4 door Japanese family sedans coming out with over 300hp...they are decent competition for actual 'sports cars'. And that isn't even considering the 400-500hp German sedans. This hp inflation race is getting a bit ridiculous. Hypothetically if this continues for another 20 years, 16year olds wont have any 100hp cars to learn to drive without killing themselves. I know this is exaggerated, but am I the only one who feels this way?

Re: 3000GT meets an SUV worth losing to...
Well the fact is the horse power race is back and now that the car designers have found a way to reduce emissions and still make power the race is back on to have the fastest cars or suv/truck out there.I mean porsche is an exotic car company so to come out with something that runs anything more than a 13s vehicle would be a great failure on their part.In fact the cayanne is faster than the Boxter S.But it is fun to be around in a time where an suv can run 12s stock.

I'm with ya man. Most people can't handle the 160-240hp cars they have now. Let alone these land missiles car makers are pumpin out now days. Especially the German stuff... they make some wickedly fast cars.

Re: 3000GT meets an SUV worth losing to...
hell...im looking at a 2004 honda CR-V LX AWD... if i do get it, next to a Brahma 15" nine.1 and Crystal audio componet set, the first upgrade will be a Turbo. thouhg the hihg 9.6:1 CR wont allow for too much boost...
its a good H24 I-Vtec engine. automatic. 60/40 power split via spydergrear differential. Uni-Body i beleive. in essence, a big N/A WRX. i figure 0.5 bar will bring it up t oaround 250hp and weighitng just under 3500lbs plus driver weight and stereo weight some little boys in their little civic are going to get a little taste of their bigger brother... well, ill get it if my Granpa wants to be really nice: he just bought it about a year ago and had decided he wants somehting that can sctually tow something so is thinking of tradeing it in. KBB trade in: $17,000. whats in my account as of now? $4750. but my birth day present was that once i was ready to buy a car of my own agian he would double what ever i had saved up. ill try and talk him down to taking 13000 at whihc point i will only have to save up about 1500 more. well then i have to pay for insurance... paying for cars suck ass... |

Re: 3000GT meets an SUV worth losing to...
My mom has that car, and it isnt really fast. SUV + 4banger isnt really mean, even with vtech. However, if you do turbo it, it should be a fun car. Good luck and keep us updated. Maybe ill talk my mom into turbo'ing her crv lol.

Re: 3000GT meets an SUV worth losing to...
yes this HP race is getting kinda scary, really scary in fact, especially since the cars are getting so cheap for HP. When i was 16 i had a 115HP Cavalier, i know if i had the car i have now, i would have killed myself or lost my liscense for life. Im really glad i had a slow car to start out with. But i mean with cars like the Ion Redline 210WHP stock, dyno proven, SRT4, EVO 8, Cobalt SS (should be same HP numbers as Redline), and just the massive amount of small 4 banger engines that they are turboing or supercharging, and puttind down 200-300WHP for around 20Gs. I mean thats alot of power and speed for a small amount of money, and when you can get these cars used for anywhere from 10-15g's, that makes these cars easy to buy as a first car.
