Inner Tie-Rod replacement on a '92 PA

I have a '92, 142k mi PA. It has a noticeable shimy in the front-end. The tires are about 3/4 wornout but still plenty of tread and seem to be wearing evenly. I was getting set to replace the balljoints but they seem solid, no movement when tested as my Haynes manual instructs. The only component that isn't rock solid is the inner tie-rod on the passenger side, it has a slight in & out travel. Would this be the culprit? This Haynes manual doesn't cover replacing the inner t-r, just the outer. Must not be part of a "......complete teardown and rebuild" as the cover states... :>) somebody told me I'd need some special tool...Anybody ever done this job?....pointers would be appreciated.

The inner tie rod connections are under the boots on the ends of the steering rack. The shop manual says the rack must be removed.

Yes a worn inner tie rod can cause a shimmy. Their should be zero play and”slight in & out travel” is cause for replacement. Be sure that the rack shaft is not moving when you are checking for play. You might be able to replace the inner tie rod without removing the rack but you will need a special tool to do it. Here is an example:

Make sure it is the correct tool for your year, make and model before you purchase. You will also need a torque wrench to properly install the inner tie rod.

It is not difficult to do but care must be taken when loosening and tightening the inner tie rod ball socket to prevent internal damage to the rack. I can give you more specific information later if you decide to replace the part yourself and will verify that this rack is serviceable without removing.

Lots of other things can case a shimmy so be sure and perform a thorough front end inspection. Wheel imbalance and incorrect caster can cause shimmy as well.

Boy am I glad I said "might". This rack will need to be removed to properly stake both sides of the inner tie rod housing. Sorry.
