help with drive axle
im having problems pulling my passenger side axle out on my 97 mitsu gallant. it just wont move...i know its just suposed to pop out with a lil pressure, but its not.
ive tried a pry bar, a really big pry bar, a slide hammer( after i ripped the axle apart and did some custom work on a few tools). any help would be awsome. |

Re: help with drive axle
I'm having this same problem with my 99 Diamante, passenger side axle.
Shop manual says to hammer on the support bracket, then to pry at the transaxle. It moved out maybe 1/8" at most when I hammered on it, and it hardly budges at all when I pry on it. Does it usually take a tremendous amount of force to remove these? What kind of pry bar do people use for this? I'm trying a couple different sizes of demolition bar. Small one doesn't give enough leverage and large one doesn't get in the tiny gap very well. Would it be OK to use a chisel to wedge it out instead of prying? I'm afraid of damaging the oil seal if I do that. |

Re: help with drive axle
I found a good way to pop the axles out is to get a fairly sized chizel. Put it where the axle meets the tranny and hit it with a hammer it should pop right out

Re: Re: help with drive axle
For the next person who searches...
The passenger side axle does not have to be pried at all! The support bracket where the inner and outer axles meet was hanging up on the block. Once I jacked the car up farther I realized this and was able to move it around, then the axle pulled right out. |
