What is the right exhaust for me?

I currently have a 3000gt sl and was woundering what the best muffler would be for both sound and performance. If you could please supply a little bit of details like a site, price or anything that may help me . Thanks for the help.

Stock muffler looks way better than most aftermarket ones and it works fine, you could get a TT exhaust and keep the stock muffler if you want a bit more performance.

Re: What is the right exhaust for me?

Borla exhaust systems on the whole are awesome, but they're mufflers are great sounding, and I think I read on their site that those provide more HP than the actual system (sounds wierd to me but meh...)

Re: What is the right exhaust for me?

Swapping mufflers wont do jack for your car, you need a full cat-back upgrade.
The most popular 4 routes are (not in any particular order):

1. Buying a used 3000gt vr4 catback (usually you can get one for $75 from a vr4 owner who is upgrading...check www.3si.org they have a 'for sale' section

2. Buying mufflers you like, then taking it to a local muffler shop and have them build you a custom 2.5" catback. (probably costs between $200-300 plus cost of mufflers, which you could get cheaply on ebay)

3. Borla http://www.3sxperformance.com/exhaust-na.asp

4. ATR

Re: What is the right exhaust for me?

Sooner or later, I'm gonna wanna get a new exhaust system as well, but I REALLY want the double piping that we have right now. Where do you get those at? And as far as HP gains go, is it better to get a VR4 system or go with a different brand like Borla?

Re: What is the right exhaust for me?

Do you mean the quad exhaust tips? And the VR4 might actually be better for HP because I think its straight through to the mufflers (which would make it loud as hell on a NA), the Borla NA has baffels or whatever they're called.

Re: What is the right exhaust for me?

vr4 exhaust is larger diameter, ~2.75" as opposed to borla's 2.5", and as Thourun mentioned, it doesn't have the resinators...so I would think the vr4 exhaust would provide more hp, and cost you a bit more low-end torque...but I know some members have said they don't even notice the loss in low-end torque...so who knows.
Personally if it were me, I'd go with the vr4 exhaust, as it is better performance for a cheaper pricetag.
But if you prefer the aftermarket look and sound with the performance upgrade, the Borla or ATR maybe the way to go.
And finally, the custom exhaust is the middle ground, providing you with the performance upgrade, with aftermarket look and sound for half the price.

Re: What is the right exhaust for me?

LOL Igovert500, you sounded like you were advertising those last couple of sentences. Hehe So question, what is low end torque? And Thourun, yes, I mean the dual tips. Hehe I love the way it looks. How loud would it be? I like a nice hum/purr, not one of those nasty Honda coughs. LOL *cough*

Re: What is the right exhaust for me?

I'm sure you are familiar with the term torque...if you were like me and knew the word, but not exactly the difference between it and hp, I suggest you read:
http://www.off-road.com/hummer/tech/power.html

and also look both terms up on www.howstuffworks.com

now, low-end torque is the torque your engine makes in lower rpms, usually under 2500, mid-range would be 2500-4500rpms, and highend 4500+.
When you open up your exhaust on an NA car, the typical result is that you gain top end hp, but if opened up too much your low-end torque will suffer...so the important thing is finding the correct diameter where you gain the most hp, while sacrificing the least low-end torque. As I mentioned before, this is typically 2.5", however some on this board have reported they have absolutely no noticeable loss of low-end torque with the 2.75" vr4 exhaust on thier NA. Notice the diameter doesn't refer to the mufflers' exits...but the diameter of the catback piping. (for instance I think borla's tips are like 3 or 3.5", this is not a problem) Hope that helps.

Re: Re: What is the right exhaust for me?

Borla is OVERPRICED big time. If you do decide to go with Borla get the TT system as it is cheaper and sounds better. Me personally I am going with what we over on 3si call the wicked set up. You basically remove the exhaust at the flange were the premuffler bolts to the muffler section and have straight pipe added, coming out both sides if wanted and adding tips. Its loud as hell but I could care less.

Another system you could do, we call it the fireman exhaust is pick out a muffler such as dynomax, flowmaster, borla, whatever and put it on in place of the pre muffler. You then run piping from it to the exit(s).

If you want a whole bunch of info on exhaust hop over to 3si and search for the exhaust threads. There are plenty to keep you reading for a long time.

Re: What is the right exhaust for me?

do exhausts for vr4 bolt right up to an NA or does it require some work to make em fit. im asking this because why would they designate a borla/other exhaust for an NA and one for a VR4?

Okay, so you said that that the Borla VR-4 Exhaust system would work on an N/A??? And you said it sounded better too... can you explain like how it does??? Like is it louder and bassier or what? thanks!

Re: What is the right exhaust for me?

i did a 3 inch cat back custom and it did me fine.

so why do you say 2.5 or 2,75 instead of 3 inch igovert500
