What do you guys think, anyone with a 94-97 accord?

ok, I went the checked out a 94 accord ex. Looks great outside, a couple small dings, but new paint job, and looks great. The interior needs some work, like a new door panel on the left, a speaker grill on the right, a few bolt covers on the ocea handles and maybe a new armrest if im picky. Overall the interior needs work but its not my concern.
The car has 140,000 on the odometer. The dealer told me that while in his possesion the engine blew up, something about the piston ring going? So he replaced the engine with a used 60,000 mile engine, did the timing belt while he was at it and said the distributor was going so he fixed that and the alternator.

Now obvisouly the transmission is still stock, 140k on it. It rides nice, if i step on it, it still has the overdrive. It sometimes shifted real smooth other times its lagged for a sec then kicked in hard. I spoke to a freind today who has a 94 ex and he explained the same shift affect in his car. He said that's how the accords shift at the time.

The car was at 3950, and he dropped it down to 3300 to which I agreed upon. I had it checked out by my mothers honda mechanics she has been going to for 20 years or so. They said the car is fine, needs a new exhaust probably by the end of the winter. And they have no estimate with the transmission. They said to offer him 3,000 for the car.

Now my roomate swears I should haggle more. and says that the dealer is lying about everything just to sell me the car and the transmission has TOO MANY MILES. I know the transmission will go eventually, but how many more miles should I expect out of a 94 tranny with 140k on it.

I need help and I need it fast, any one have suggestions?

I think that 3000.00 bucks for a 5th gen Accord is too much for a car with so many problems and now it should have a salvage title since the motor has been taken out and replaced. I purchased my 5th Gen Accord 4 years ago at 5500 with 150,000 mile on it and that's with a clear title. This one has a different motor and you're not even sure if really has 60,000 miles. I say you do some good carfax research on this one. I'd be iffy.

Ask the dealer to show you the paperwork for the used engine he got, and the orders for all the stuff.

If a car gets work done inside a dealership(if it is a larger one) they have to do work orders and such for the tech department. For instance, if a salesguy wanted a car detailed, he needed to come down and fill out a request form...and that was just for a wash and wax where I was working...so if he got all taht work done, he should have some proof of it.

140k on a honda isn't that bad...IMO, tranny might just need a flush.
Worn piston rings on older accords with higher miles is a normal thing...I don't know about the engine blowing up, but they do get worn and leak oil, leading to blue smoke out the exhaust...semi-commonly after 120k.

I'd be cautious until I saw some proof of those claims..but if a certified honda tech that you trust says it is alright...then go for it. Car like that usually runs 2-3 grand...so if he goes that low...why not.

i did come across a 94 teg with 40k, ls version red color with like a hood dent, and some minor exterior blemeshes for about 3400.. i guess i would be forced to get a carbon fiber hood for it considering the condition =)!!!
