Re: What does a defective CV sound

A bad cv joint will make a clunk-clunk-clunk type of sound, (with wheel rotation), especially when cornering, and may be intermittent.

From what you describe I would first check the "dog bone" and other engine/trans mounts

Re: What does a defective CV sound

if you have abs on your car, most likely, the frst time you put the car in D after it being shut off you may hear the clunking. it happens to me sometimes and its just the abs engaging. i dont know if it is a problem with ust the 3.8l w/ traction control or something else

is the noise when you put it in gear or when you take it out of park?
If it is when you put it in gear... Does it happen immediately or after a second, when the transmission usually shifts in?

Re: Re: What does a defective CV sound

Our old '87 Camry had bad CV joints that made a clunk-clunk-clunk sound when taking left turns. But unfortunatelly, it would have cost $600 to fix the cars problems (the CV joints and 3 main seals from a bad oil leak), which was more than the car was worth. So what should have been my car (I love my Intrigue ) was a trade-in last year for a new Santa Fe.

I think what you're describing is the infamous "yatzee shaker" rattle. It tends to happen when drive in reverse or shift into drive after being shut off. My car makes that saound too, only it almost sounds like it's driving over a plastic bottle. There are several theories to the issue; ABS self-test or Trac Sys related, but it's really not much of a problem.

The ABS engaging on an intrigue when you start up is more like a short humm than anything else.

Could also be the engine mount/strut, aka dog bone. If it is, you should be able to hear it by rocking the car fore/aft and listening for that clicking. Start there, it is the cheapest of the possibilities mentioned here.

BTW, the ABS sounded different on my '98 compared to my '00. The '98 sounded like a bucket of bolts and the '00 sounds like a loud vibration.

Re: What does a defective CV sound

Like Paul said, they could sound different. I think my problem is ABS ralated because it did this again today and the brake pedal vibrated (not quite the right word, can't quite explain it) a little.
