Timing Belt Jetta 99

Does anyone know what are the symptoms to change the timing belt. My car has 97K miles on that and my manual says it needs to be replaced on 90K miles. My car slightly knocks each time I remove my foot from the gas peddal...could that be a sign to chane the timing belt?

i'd have it changed.. thats way over for a t belt... and change the water pump too at the same time

im not sure what it runs, but if your having the t belt done, 1.5-2 hrs more is worth it, most of the time they will have in the price and labor manual how much it is to add a water pump job to a t belt job. another words they prolly have it set up in the book that each one has different pricing. such as price of just t belt, price for t belt and water pump, and price for just water pump.

RUN... do not delay, get the belt changed. Zero clearance engines self destruct when the belt fails. Also have the belt tensioner changed as well. Mine failed, caused the belt to fail, and the rest was very expensive internal damage to the valve train.

I dont believe our volkswagen engines self destruct when the timing belt blows, I think toyotas do, but can anyone back me up on this, its getting close for me to change mine also.

at what mileage should you change the belt??

I have a 97 jetta 2.0 and the manual says nothing about changing timming belt.. do I need to or not ??? 78,000 miles

On a 99 jetta i believe a 5 speed requires t-belt change at 60.. auto at 40 or 50k.. my manual states every 60k.. if that t-belt snaps it can cause some serious damage.. not worth playing with.. also change the tensioner, rollers, water pump, at that mileage the accessory belt is probably going as well.. a t-belt on those cars is a pain.. i had to remove my motor mount and all that jazz.. alot of fun

Yea vw engines do break if the t-belt breaks... I can get pix for you from a tdi and 2.0 that recently are having there heads replaced because the t-belt broke and bent all the valves in the head. A t-belt on a 2.0 with a water pump is about 600$. REQUIRED TO BE REPLACED AT 80K MILES MAX!! i am suprised you havent bought yourself a new cylinder head yet ($2500 job to repair).
