Windows XP Messengers, what the _____ is this?

I installed XP Professional last night and every time I connect to the internet these fucking message things keep poping up. I saw something about a messenger when I was installing it. How the fucking hell do I get rid of this fucking shit. Theres not even a messenger program running in the background.

Re: Windows XP Messengers, what the _____ is this?

It's a program so people can talk on a server or home network. It's not a messenger program like AIM or YIM where you can chat with others across the internet.
Go to the windows Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs, click Add/Remove Windows Components, and at the bottom of that list declick the Windows Messenger.
I still get it running it the background sometimes after I did that. So I block it with my firewalls so it doesn't access the internet.

Re: Windows XP Messengers, what the _____ is this?

you can't remove it. What you need to do is upgrade it to MSN messenger, then you can turn it off. Windows XP originally came with win. mess. but then they changed it to msn messenger

Re: Windows XP Messengers, what the _____ is this?

no I ment I think the pop-ups may have been adware insted of the windows messanger thing that I was thinking it was. I ran Adaware and No Adware back to back three times before it finally didnt find anything. I'll see if that helps.. heh.

Re: Windows XP Messengers, what the _____ is this?

1: Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
2: Click Administrative Tools
3: Click Services
4: Double click Services Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
5: Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
6: Click the STOP button.
7: Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
8: Click OK

Edit: I just nerdified this thread

Re: Windows XP Messengers, what the _____ is this?

damn. I was trying to think of what I did to make it go away and Onimacus is right, that's what I did too. It's been like 2 years since I had to do it so I completely forgot. I remember seeing it on techtv before.
Onimacus gets 2 from me.
