Resonator

Hey whats up guys? Have any of you running stock engines removed your resonators? Is it worth it? I know you have to remove it when running any aftermarket CAI's. Hit me up let me know...Thanks

Removing the intake resonator really only makes your stock intake system sound louder, that's about it. You WON'T get any power/hp gains from it unless you throw a K&N filtercharger drop-in air filter into your airbox to replace the crappy stock paper filter element with. I did that with my '00 Civic before I got my short ram intake, and I liked the effect it had on the car, it didn't do as much for me as when I put my intake on, but you'll definitely notice a difference in the sound, it'll be a little deeper, and it'll be a bit louder, but nothing like getting an actual intake system. I'd say go for it and take off the resonator, but GET a K&N drop-in filter too to complete the effect. The filter will give you a little better throttle response.

it does help to lower your under hood temperature though. cooler air=more h.p. so you tell me? yes it will help don't expect a drastic change though and it also saves weight too.

silverY2kcivic....you have a short ram? cool. how do you like it. i have been debating betwen CAI and short ram. i always thought the quicker you could get more air to the intake the better. what is your opinion on it, and what brand do you have....oh yeah...whats a resonator..hehehe and where is it

I took my resonator off yesterday. Hey might as well take it off now since im gonna get the aem cai. But yea it sounds alot better. I'll probably get the K&N soon, i'm looking for that better throttle response

Yep, get it out. I removed it and with a K&N filter there definetely IS a small difference performance wise + deeper sound.
Just be sure that the intake box gets the cool air out of the resonater box area.

Yup, I have an APC Intimidator short ram on my '00 DX coupe. The one I have, I LOVE it, it's a lot louder than almost any other intake I've ever heard, including AEM (or any) CAI's for that matter. It rumbles so much between 2000 and 4000 RPM, that most people that hear it think I have some huge exhaust or something, it turns heads at least. But I'm rather satisfied with my intake. The quicker you get the air in, the better yes, but the colder the air charge, the more efficiently the engine is gonna be able to utilize it, and the more power gains you'll see from it. Short rams don't let the air cool down nearly enough to have the effect that a CAI has. With a shorty ram, it's just a bigger pipe to feed the air through than stock, but remember on MOST short rams, the pipe is alunimun, and we all know how well metal conducts heat, and so as the engine temp rises, so does the heat factor, thus heating up the intake pipe. In all actuality, a short ram probably lets in HOTTER air than the stock intake does, as that system is plastic, so doesn't heat up as much. With a CAI, the air is moving through the pipe so much, it doesn't have very much time to heat up since the air is drawn from as close to the front of the car as possible, where with a shorty, it's pulling the warm air that's collecting in the engine area. But for bang for the buck vs. stock set up, a shorty is still well worth it I think if MAX hp gains from it aren't your main concern.

The resonator is the big black box that is connected to your stock intake system, the resonator simply quiets down the air flow/turbulence going into your intake, so you don't hear it very much. In all actuality, it's just dead weight in your car, and doesn't do anything for hp or power weather it's on or off. It's usually located (in Hondas) on the front most passenger side of the engine bay. Hope that helps you out.

this is true, however, aluminum is a very good dissipator of heat. that is why electronic heat sinks and such are made from aluminum. it draws the heat out of the component and then dissipates it. this is due to its low density (mass to volume ratio) since most objects tend toward equilibrium, the aluminum will continue to draw in heat and dissipate it. the problem that will be had with this is if it is drawing heat from the air and objects around it and dissipating it into the tube. if it was happening vice versa, from the air inside to the air outside, then it would be ok. i guess that since the aem has a ceramic coating, this would promote the draw from with-in dissipate with-out. the only thing is the insulation barrier might not allow such good disipation. but wnough with the physics/chemistry. i am leaning toward the short ram for the simple fact that i plan on going turbo sometime down the road, and i dont want to spend more than 100 or so on an intake just to have to take it off later. will the short ram offer any kind of gain over stock? I know it will lighten the front end, making minute, probably, immeasurable improvement in acceleration

i took my stock airbox off my stock pipe and put an apc intimidator cone filter on it, and took out the resonator in the fender well. it was a pain taking that thing out, i had take it out through the bottom of the fender by removing the plastic stuff. i like the nice deep growling sound it gave me and i noticed a little more power difference, then i got my exhaust on and could notice a big improvement in throttle response.

YES it will. Remember that a short ram is a straight pipe, no bends except for the one usually 90 degree mandrel bend where the pipe attaches to the T/B. The short ram pipe is also bigger diameter than the stock piping, and in many cases, even bigger than the opening to the throttle body, itself. This is good because it allows maximum airflow into the intake manifold, thus providing increased air for the engine. Also, the short ram piping (as is the case even with CAIs) is smooth inside, unlike stock intake piping which most of the time has ribs in it somewhere in the piping, which of course makes the inside of it bumpy, so imagine what it does to air speeding through it. For a typical short ram (Injen and AEM excluded, as they offer different numbers), you can expect between 2-3hp gains when used with a stock intake system, such as stock T/B, stock intake manifold, and such parts. Custom throttle body and/or intake manifold, you can expect even higher gains, some claim up to 9hp of gains. But anyways, bang for the buck, a short ram is WELL worth it, I think.
