oxygen sensors and do they really need to be replaced??

so, exhaust shop said replace em, they've been what everyone else says why the engine light is on. but others ay nothing permanent is going to happen if i dont replace them....

whats your take on the subject?

cost if youve had to replace or do it professionally.

and is it a do-it-yuourself option?
