I think I broke it

A few days ago, I was sitting in my car and I started smelling some rancid smell comming from my steering colum and when I went to turn my car off, it was jammed and I had to use a lot of force to turn it off. I tried turning it on after this happened and I turned it to the on position and I heard almost like a grinding sound. Now the car will not start and I am thinking that it may be the Starter or the Alternator or possibly even the Solenoid. Please someone let me know what the problem maybe .

what year some of the cougars had a recall for the wiring in the colum something about starting fires

look it up in all data or autozone.com if it is print the letter and take it to the dealer
