My Jeep developed a new noise today, which can only be heard within the speeds of 25-40 mph. It's not that loud & can only be heard with the radio off & the window down (I live in the city)!
I did notice that the sound would disappear when I turn the wheel to the right! Any thoughts anyone? |

Re: New Noise Developed
Big vehicle, where's the noise coming from? At least a general idea would be good, and what kind of nose is it, a clunk, squeel, whine, etc.

Re: New Noise Developed
I have a '98 GC 4.0 I6 & the noise seems to be coming from the front. I believe its coming from somewhere under the vehicle or in the tire area. It does't sound like its coming from the engine & performance is the same.
The noise sounds like somethings rubbing...similar to a piece of tape stuck to a tire ( I did check for this)! I also noticed a rubbing sound when moving in reverse with the wheel turned to the right! |

Re: New Noise Developed
check your front wheel wells, it seems that u might have soemthing rubbing on the tires. turn the wheel lock to lock as well and check for clearence around everything.

Re: New Noise Developed
It just might be my front bumper (hopefully).
I know there's not that much clearance between my tire & front bumper. Maybe my tires are to big?...P235/75R 15 (no lift). |

Re: New Noise Developed
shouldn't be the tire size thats the problem. I have the same size on mine (up country tho) and no problems. now if you had 31 x 10.5/15 you could have a rub when turning. Thats what mine had on it when I first test drove it and it rubbed like h e double toothpicks.

Re: New Noise Developed
After driving slowly w/the door 1/2 open, I was able to hear the noise better & it's coming from my rear driver side wheel, not the front!
Everything looks OK from a glance, now I'm thinking it might be the brake? |

Re: New Noise Developed
could be the disc brake with the caliper slides sticking, something on the pads, or the pads worn down to metal.
Or - it could be in the park brake inside the rotor. Some mud, dirt or even a piece of the lining broken off like happened on mine. hopefully not a wheel bearing!!! |

Re: New Noise Developed
Yeah, I hope its not a wheel bearing too!
I might try spraying brake cleaner 1st to see if it helps! |

Re: New Noise Developed
The brake cleaner did not help!
I think I gave a wrong description of this noise, it sounds more like a squeal (not very noticable)! I thought it was my drive belt but its not. The faster I travel, the faster the noise seems to move as well! Again, this noise develops once I reach about 25 mph. |

Re: New Noise Developed
My 95 caddy did this too. turned out to be warn brake warning tab on rear brake. new brakes fixed it. only did it at certain speeds just like yours.

Re: New Noise Developed
I finally pin pointed the noise & it was coming from a wire near the transfer case. The wires are protected by a plastic covering & it was hanging & making contact with my rear drive shaft (creating the noise). I used a zip tie to elevate the wire & that solved the problem!
