88ram100 wont start if hot/stalls after it's hot

Thanks for any ideas. This has stumped my mechanic for over a year. He thinks it's the computer. If the truck does start, it will run about ten minutes and then stall. It wont restart unless I wait about five minutes and then it's fine from there, no stalling out again. If the truck doesn't start from the get go, it's usually cause it's hot out or the sun has been on the hood. Then I'll have to wait an hour or so, though I dont know for sure that the time makes a difference. Somebody mentioned distributer cap arcing, but the truck runs fine after the stall and start.

Have the fuel pump and filter been checked?

I can certainly check that but is that something that could be affected by temp? One more thing to add, which is probably key, is that there is NO spark when this happens(is fuel pump still a possibility?) and that's why my mechanic thinks it's the computer.

Alos this is a CA truck. Problem is it wasn't available in CA when it was made so if it is a computer, I cant seem to find one and that's why I'm hoping it's something else.

Ahh, ok no spark either. Might be the computer.

You also may want to take a look at the battery cables. I had one older car in which the btty cable looked ok on the outside, but was corroded on the inside. Made all sorts of odd things happen. Worth a look and a $15 part.

I would say its the hall effect pickup coil (round black disk under the rotor). My 88 dodge van as well as my father 89 ram pickup had the same problem. It should through a code , but did not in either case. Should be no distributor refrence signal code.

p.s.. I replaced my computer , coil etc. for no reason. Live and learn.

Very interesting!! Fords are famous for the hall sensor going, didn't know this was an issue on Mopars also. That would do it...had the hall sensor go out in the Ford I had, and had similar symptoms to yours, now that I'm thinking about it.

I had actually done a ton of research on the net trying to find anybody else who had this problem, and I did ssee someone who had mentioned this Hall sensor in replying to a post regarding a Chrysler. His name was 'Sheeters' or something. I mentioned this to my mechanic who kind of brushed it off. Now I told him a second person had said this and he said OK let's try it. It's a $35 part and we've been bartering labor as I'm an electrician. So we'll see. I really appreciate your time in helping and if this does it I would be more than happy to answer,or try to, any homebuilding questions you have.

I hope that's it, the hall sensor can be a really irritating intermittent thing, which seems to describe you and your mechanic's situation.
