How to clean EGR system on 1992 Rodeo?

I just recently bought this 1992 Rodeo V6 3.1L 4x4. It has 160,000 miles on it and idles rough. It makes a heavy dieseling sound when I hit the accelerator. It also has a good oil leak coming from the back of the engine. I have slowly been replacing parts trying to get it to run better. I have installed new NGK spark plugs, replaced the fuel filter, changed the air filter, added a new PCV valve and several types of fuel cleaners and additives. The idle is a lot better but the throttle performance and gas mileage is still lacking. I would now like to clean my EGR system. Could someone please tell me what I need to look for and how to clean it.

Thanks

I found your post because I'm searching for the exact same thing. My problems are exactly the same as yours.

Could someone please reply to this post and help a couple of "new guys" out?

There are many pics and faq's for Isuzu motors but none for the GM 3.1.
Is it the location/procedure the same?

Re: How to clean 1992 Rodeo EGR?

pull the egr off and clean it with some carb cleaner (just make sure it is o2 sensor and cat safe). if it is really bad get some small wire brushes and scrub it up with the carb cleaner. hope this helps with the rough idle, if not, maybe some vacuum leaks. to check for those get a propane torch and unscrew the front part of the burner and put a couple feet of hose (fuel line, vacuum line, whatever fits) over the end so you can direct it wherever you want. Then put it on high and spray it over the intake gaskets, vacuum lines, throttle body gaskets and if the rpm jumps up then youve found your leak. hopefully it is just the egr :-)
