Chips

There are many upon many sites and places on ebay that sell the 20hp performance chips that modify the fuel ratio. Are any of these legitimate or worth buying? If so who?

Re: Chips

I have a 94 3.4l Camaro, and have already done a CAI and not true dual exhaust, (just muffler and tips) any suggestions that would be worth it for a v6?

all they are is little risistors that trick the airmass flo sensor into thinking the air is more dense than it really is. or something to that effect. check his feedback if you find a angry customer they will tell you what it is.

Re: Chips

the little resistor works well if you have a camaro with a speed density setup instead of Mass Air Flow, but the only 4th gens with SD were the 93's, which i have, and IMO its worth the 5-10 bucks.. but it really wont do you any good if you have a MAF setup (94-2002)..

in most cases it's a resister you put in place of the IAT sensor to fool the ecm into thinking it's 40* outside. this changes the timing and can create spark knock. these arent for daily use, but most places forget to mention that

Re: Chips

with any sixer there is no short fix, sorry to say.

pretty much the only way you are going to make power is to open the engine up, and modify the hell out of it.

-focus on the heads, port polish and back cut valves, roller rockers. thermal coatings on the chamber and exhaust port. thermal coat the valve faces as well.

-get a set of flat top pistons, thermal coat the piston face and dryfilm coat the skirt. and wrap em in some gapless rings

-throw in an aftermarket cam

-get a set of headers, i believe RKsport has some, but dont quote me on that.

- maybe make a crank scraper for it, and use some royal purple or Mobile 1 5W-30 oil.

- then take it to a performance shop that has chip programing capablity and have them reprogram your chip to work with the new engine.

thats really the best advice i can give ya with a sixer.

Re: Chips

How much of that could be done for how much if I'm rebuilding anyway?
I'm pricing a good performance rebuild vs. a LT1 (or maaaaybe LS1) donor car...

Re: Chips

hard to say, the coating isnt very expencive if youve already got it all torn apart. the machine work depends on the shop you take it to. so i cant reallygive you an estimate.

Re: Chips

when it comes to the sixer performance, unless you are dead set on making a fast v-6 car go out and get a v-8 somehow. if all you are lookin for is mpg and a little more get-up-and-go than bolts-ons will work. if you are trying to seriously contend at the track than go get a v-8 swap or buy a v-8 car. there just arent enough aftermarket parts available for the v-6 cars. you can get some basic machine work on like heads and manifolds, and i have found one site in canada that makes a supercharger system for the 3.4. the only other option is forced induction which again, unless you are dead set on prooving your sixer is fast it aint worth it...

If you want a performance six cylinder get a turbo Buick or a Turbo Trans AM 89. Other than that, except for the rare cases, your best bet is the v-8. There is just more of a parts following for them.
