90 escort lx 1.9 idle problem

hi, I'm a newbie here, but I've got a problem.
My 90 escort lx has an idle problem. When it started it was alot more violent. When it is in park or nuetral it is much worse. It jumps from 1000 rpm to somewhere around 1500 rpms over and over. When it started it went even higher, almost 2000, and there was a clicking sound coming from behind the glove box, like a relay going on and off. Now i don't here the click and it is less violent, but it is still there.
it also does it in drive, but it is less noticable. The warmer the engine is, the worse it is. I was thinking maybe the idle control motor, or something like that, but the relay noise was bothering me.
i have a 1.9L CFI engine. Its got 90,500 miles on it and is automatic 3spd. can anybody help?
thanx Dann

Check the whole engine over for vacuum leaks. If there are none, then check the MAP sensor. It's located on the passenger side strut tower.
