base to vr-4 HP

what makes the vr-4 get an extra 100 horses from the base model? I know the turbo makes a huge difference but is that the only thing that is different? Any other parts in the engine? Thx

Also i've been wondering since the base is 3200 and the vr-4 is 3800 i think? Even though the vr-4 has an extra 100 hp doesnt the weight play a big role in that or no?

Re: base to vr-4 HP

for every 100lb you take off yougain a .1 in the 1\4 so 600lb would not be that much of a loss. the block is the same diff internals so you can run turbos.

The VR4 has forged internals (stronger), instead of cast...the turbos make all the difference beyond that for horsepower. For speed, the AWD makes a big difference in acceleration.

From experience, a FWD car pushing the same power as a vr-4, the vr-4 will still have a better time in the 1/4 but the FWD will have a higher trap speed due to traction, unless your able to put down 1.7's on the 60' time. And yes, the turbos do make all the difference in the world, but as far as engine components, a VR-4 without the turbos is much slower than a base without turbos, but a vr-4 will make up on that with turbos when upgraded turbos come into play.

The difference is the compession of the pistons, 2bolt vs 4 bolt, and less or no oil squirters in the NA models.

The rods are forged in both models, I think the cranks are forged in both also, but not completely sure.

Well I have a 92 VR4 and it has a 2 bolt. I think it is 91- when ever they changed the body style is 2-bolt and then after they changed the body style the switched to a 4-bolt. There is only a 20 hp difference in the two cars (stock of course).

wrong, they switched from a 2-bolt to a 4-bolt (remained 2-bolt in N/A's) . . . and at the same time, cast to forged internals in both turbo and non-turbo along with a switch from an 18-spline tranny to a 25-spline tranny, all in the middle of 1992. They didnt change the bodystyle to the 2nd generation until 94.

As far as the 20 hp difference, just remove the small little nipple in the boost solenoid in the 1st gens, then you'll have that 20 hp and you'll be exactly the same as a 2nd gen.

Different sources I have come across indicated all DOHC's whether tt or na were forged crank and rods. The pistons were always cast though.

Re: base to vr-4 HP

the crank went from cast to forged in 92.5, the cast version is no longer avalible as a new part.

Re: Re: base to vr-4 HP

Nope its forged crank and rods on all the DOHC's after 92.5. The pistons were always cast. From talking to IPO on 3si about his project SL-T, the cast used for 3s engines is a special cast and is tronger than most regualr cast pistons.
