Question 1992 honda accord wiper switch--help

I have a 1992 Honda Accord Ex. When i turn on the wipers , there is a 5 minute delay before wipers come on. The wipers work fairly well in low but switching to high sometimes causes them to stop. A week ago they failed totally in a serious rain storm. I got to a garage in one piece and the mechanic said I needed to replace a pivot cap. I am sure that is probably true but its the delay in the wiper operation that puzzles me. Its almost always a 5 minute interval before they come on. Any ideas or info would be appreciated.

Possibly the switch or a relay.

Thank you for the info. I am sure that it is not the switch but the relay is a possibility. I wasn't aware that there was a relay for the windshield wipers.

I read you response above that you think it is NOT the switch ... but I can almost guarantee you that it is indeed the switch. We run across this problem quite a bit at work. The contacts inside the switch begin to wear and lose contact. The reason for the delay is that the switch will heat up and then the contacts will touch again. I feel very confident that if you replace the switch ... your problem should disappear.
