Painters please help!!!!!!!

Ok, so I sprayed a first coat of a single stage paint (tremclad). It went down nice and smooth and even. Then as it dried it started blotching....well I guess seperating leaving pinhole size and bigger spots where there was no paint. Now I was thinking it was the gun's settings but as I said it laid down nice and even. I had to dilute the paint with varsol. It says the paint can be diluted with varsol or mineral spirits. Could it be that I didn't mix in the varsol good enough causing it to seperate?? Should I use mineral spirits instead? I need help quick because I want to do another coat tomorrow. Should I paint over then sand that coat and lay down a third coat or should I sand this first coat then lay down the second coat??

Thanks!!

Re: Painters please help!!!!!!!

My guess is that the paint was thinned, rather than reduced. Thinning can create chemical reactions that create a bad surface for the paint to adhere to. Reducing is like thinning, except there is a special "thinner"/Reducer that is made for a certain paint.

Or it could be that the surface was not preped properly. What primer did you use? If you laid a acrylic base over an enamel primer, all hell will break loose.

There are some other guys here that may have some suggestions as well.

Re: Painters please help!!!!!!!

sounds like you have what we call "fisheyes" which are normally cause from a bad prep. job. make sure you have that surface AS CLEAN AS YOU CAN before you paint on it. dawn dish soap works well because it removes the oil from your hands and shit like that.
