Battery light

Morning, I have a 730 auto. If I let go of the gas suddenly the battery light flickers on. It is starting to come on more and more. Any ideas before I completely brake down??!!

Thanks in advance.........

As the light comes on only when you suddenly decelerate, it sounds like your alternator isnt quite doing its job. This could be due to loose belts slipping a little, therefore the alternator isnt being turned as quickly as it should. Check the belts for excessive play, maybe after a drive when they've warmed up a little. If theyre quite hot, this is often due to friction being generated, by being loose. Failing that, the alternator itself could be suspect. Maybe a set of replacement brushes would do the trick. Most good electrical automotive shops will be able to run a test on it, usually while still in the car, and only for very small money. If a replacement is needed, they usually do a trade in/exchange, taking your old one against a guaranteed reconditioned one. Yours would then be overhauled etc. and passed on to somebody else. Much cheaper and just as good as buying a brand new one. Hope this helps.

Good advice from flywheel.

Also, sometimes the light comes on because the engine is not running well at idle. Next time it happens look at the tachometer to see if the engine speed is normal or perhaps a little low. The engine has to be turning at idle speed, say 600 rpm, or above for the alternator to work properly. I've had cars that did not idle very well and the light would come on at stoplights and the problem you described during deceleration was very pronounced.
