Unhappy 96 Jetta wont start

I have a 1996 Jetta Trek with a 2.0 liter 4 cyl with automatic trans. It will not crank at all. The battery is new and all gauges are working. When this first happened I smelled a burning smell when I opened the hood. I don't suspect the starter. Is there a relay, fuse or solenoid to check?

Re: 96 Jetta wont start

it could be an issue with your timing.....something could be wrong with your distributor...if its not craking your not getting spark also...check your sparkplugs...and if they are good..make sure ur fuel injectors and alternater are good...and make sure ur Mass Flow Air Sensor on your intake or intakebox is connected.

Re: 96 Jetta wont start

Why don't you suspect the starter? Have you tried moving the shifter into other positions & neutral to start? There is a park/neutral safety switch in the transmission (near the linkage) that controls the P/N relay. The relay is in position #14, that's the second from left on the first row of relays that are attached to the main two-row relay panel. Confused? Here's another way of looking at it; The row closest to the fuses is position 7-12, the next row above that is positions 1-6. Those are the main relay panel positions, above that are clip-on optional relays positions 13-18. You can jumper pins #2 & #8 to bypass it, that eliminates the P/N switch. You can also just connect 12V + to the small red/black wire on the starter solenoid & it should crank, otherwise the starter is bad.
