'92 300sd steering shake --- damper needed?

Greetings....

I have a '92 300sd, the 140 body. At times (mainly upon first drive of the day), there is a very noticable shaking in the steering wheel at medium speeds - say between 35 - 50. After 50mph, it seems to go away. Another thing that is strange is that it does not always do this....it seems rather random as to when it will happen. Also seems to go away after several miles of driving!?!

I remember reading on the web somewhere that this was a rather common problem in this model year, and that there were damper type fixes available to correct it.

I would appreaciate any information or suggestions that you can offer.

Mark

You need to replace the lower control arm bushings that normally go out around 100,000 miles. They tie the control arms to the frame and they angle back from the wishbone and connect under the car. They are circular in diameter and they cost about $100.00 per side plus at least three or four hours labor at the local alignment shop and you then have to relaign the car. I would only use Mercedes parts or you will have to replace them more often and the labor is expensive. Good luck!

Not to disagree with anyone but your steering coupling is worn out. If it were veering on the interstate I might think control arm bushings. But what you described is either tires out of round and/or balance or the coupling.
