buying a GP

I am considering buying a 1996 Grand Prix with the 3.4 V-6 with 82K miles. I am buying it from a private seller and everything seems legit so far. I haven't looked at it in person yet. Are there any 'red flags' I need to watch for when looking this vehicle over, aside from a standard inspection. Any recurring problems in this model year? engine? etc...
Any ideas on a reasonable buying price??

All suggestions appreciated. Thanks!!!

OK, I'm still sleeping. 16 hours a day will do that to you.

How's that? Just tired. OK, I'm losing it too.

Re: buying a GP

82K miles sounds good for a '96. Was it one owner? Well maintained? I suggest you scan through these message boards and look for problems with that year and model. I don't know if the '96 is made the same way as the newer ones. Most times you see parts for '97-'03 grouped together. Common GP problems I've seen repeatedly...a water leak on the front passenger side floor which comes from either a blocked drain hose on the firewall or a cracked cowl...the rear-view mirrors go bad...the lights on the steering wheel go out...a wind rush noise from the outside mirrors-poor design-nothing they can do about it. Check www.kbb.com for the private party selling value. I'd just look it up but I don't know what state you are in and value varies by location. Log on and put in your zip code and sedan or coupe, and the options it has, and it will give you a value. Hope this helps. My '98 GP has been fine...no major problems, just annoyances.
