turbo intake setup

I'm trying to figure out why my roommates idle is horrible. He has a vacuum port clamped off, and another one siliconed out. I don't know what is supposed to go there, but is he missing his iacv? I think he might be missing something else to, but give it a looksee...

Re: turbo intake setup

might be a long shot, but maybe check the injectors to see if they're in all the way or if the rings (called O-rings right?) are damaged on them. The reason I say this is because my friend has surging high idle and it ended up being the injectors were pushed out and a ripped ring.

Re: turbo intake setup

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think that's his problem. Is there anything that's missing from the picture (see question marks)? He pulled apart his intake manifold 2 weeks ago and found no problems in there, but I'll ask him about it.

Re: turbo intake setup

I would look at the VECI label under the hood for the vaccum diagram and figure out what is going on. I don't know much about this particular vehicle, though if I had to assume anything I would start by seeing that the plugs tell you, if it's buring lean, unmetered air leak, if it's burning rich, well numerous possibilitys, also check the o2 sensor values with a small voltmeter and see if they are within spec. I don't know what spec is, so you will have to call autozone, or look it up elsewhere. Sorry I can't be more help.

Re: turbo intake setup

Maybe I just don't see it, but does he have a MAP sensor hooked up? Or is it under that red wire?
The "?" mark on the right looks fine, that I know for sure.

survey says... put the map sensor back where it belongs.

Re: turbo intake setup

What is the MAP sensor? Is that the same as the MAF (mass air flow sensor)? This picture is a little different, but I'm not exactly sure where I should be looking.

Re: turbo intake setup

The left arrow is where either the maf or tps should hook up. See that other little black circle thing on the back with two screws holding it on? It's circled on top in this pic, and they should look exactly alike. I forget which one is which, but I know the engine should have one of each! I'm assuming the tps is what he's missing since it's right next to the throttle cable.

The capped off thing is for a ~6" vacuum line that goes straight into the back of the engine. Is there another capped off hole on the block back there? It would also help if you told us what kind of engine he has.

Re: turbo intake setup

He said the engine is out of a 97. It is a vtec twin cam out of another car. I can not verify size at this time. Here is a picture of the turbo setup if that helps at all.

TPS is throttle position sensor, right? This sensor probably controls the idle. Where would the Idle air control valve be? For my jimmy the MAF is directly in the air intake, the IACV is right on the throttlebody, and the TPS is actually another cable on the throttle, so I haven't been much help as to what's missing on his setup.

Anyways, I took this picture as well. I see the black circular disk, and it looks like something is connected to it. I bet you're right on the TPS.

Re: turbo intake setup

O yeah, my friend took his air filter off for the first pic so you can see the turbo. He doesn't run THAT reckless!

Re: turbo intake setup

The map sensor it that black box on the firewall, looks like he's using a 2-bar or 3-bar GM map sensor. But it doesn't look like it's even hooked up at all, just sitting there.
So it's probably the TPS that he's missing.

Re: turbo intake setup

Does the TPS plug right into the MAP sensor?

Re: turbo intake setup

I don't believe so. Here's some images to look at. From the pic you put up, you can't see the TPS really.

Re: turbo intake setup

Thanks for the help, is something supposed to plug into the MAP sensor? It looks like there's just a bare electrical plug. Is the MAP the same as a MAF?

Re: turbo intake setup

The MAP measures the vacuum and pressure of the air and the MAF measures the volume of air going through.
There should be a vacuum line hooked into the MAP sensor as well as wires to it. The wires are the ones from the stock MAP sensor, only you have to cut off the plug and get it to plug into the 2-bar or 3-bar sensor (depending on which one he's using). Here's a pic of the wires on the stock sensor (instead of using the 3-bar GM sensor he decided to use a "missing link" with his stock one):http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...cSpoon/MAP.jpg
Here's some wiring info on the 3-bar if you need it: http://www.hondata.com/3barinstall.html
