Depends on the car. I had a $500 that I put $2500 worth of repairs into. But it was worth it.

Ricochet, sounds like alot going wrong. i have a 79 chev truck, and it has never left me stranded. i paid $300 for it. i dont drive it really at all right now, but come winter i will be. and i have never had a problem with it. it all depends on the car, if its in good shape, just a shitty clutch then go ahead.

I just bought a '95 GA GT 3.1L and had to rebuild the motor. Then the tranny went and I figured if I was already in that far keep going. Now I have a car with a new engine and tranny and should be good to go for a few hundred thousand miles. Plus now I get 36mpg.

Edit: I forgot to add the reason. If you think it's good other wise fix it. If you toss it you're out $500 already right?
