88 Lesabre "C" engine code reading?

Finally fingured out what was wrong with it, timing chain tensioner broken, cam sensor interruptor broken, then realized the battery was bad. Now that it is running, it's pinging pretty loudly with a check engine light also. This is the first time it has ran in about 2 years so is this something to be expected? I heard there is a way to get the check engine light to flash a code for you by using a jumper wire where the diagnostic computer plugs in. Also where can i find out what my code means?
