Unhappy 87 Pickup runs poorly when heavy on pedal

My 87 2wd toyota pickup (22R engine w/carb & 4-speed manual) has 67,000 miles on it. It's been wonderful but has recently developed a problem. It runs great when I go easy on it, but when I'm heavy on the pedal it starts to run very rough. It sputters, spurts and stalls. After 10 minutes or so of this bad behavoir it settles down and runs OK again. I've replaced plugs, wires, distributor, rotor, points, air filter, and the fuel filter, but it still exhibits the same problem. I bought a new PCV valve but haven't installed it yet. I can't seem to see where it goes. I've sprayed it fairly well with carb cleaner but this hasn't helped either. Any thoughts?

Re: 87 Pickup runs poorly when heavy on pedal

I had the same in my 89. That turned out to be moisture in the distributor. It would do the same sputtering when normal to heavy on the gas, then settle down after the truck ran for a bit and the moisture evaporated some. Sounds like you've already covered that but it sounds like one in the same prob. But what about fuel injectors? Not sure that it would stop sputtering if it were this though.

your pcv valve goes through you valve cover, you should see the thick black short hos that goes to your intake chamber. It's a bi%$ to get out. Try the carb clean, hopefully that should do the trick.

I found the PCV Valve and replaced it. Piece of Cake. I have already tried the carb cleaner spray, but I'll try again. Should I focus my efforts on the linkages that are visible on the outside of the carb, or spray the cleaner down inside the carb? Should I get an old toothbrush and try scrubbing all moving parts? Should I remove the carb and "re-build it"? I did that once on my 66 Chevy about 2 decades ago. It really doesn't even look dirty. Thank you for the help.

I would focus a bit on the linkage, spray the whole think. Also spray the choke well and move it about, see it moves freely, you know, make sure you don't feel any grinding or that sort of thing. Try adjusting your valves. They might be a bit out of wack. And check the idle and the timing. Do as much as you can before re-building the carb.

Make sure its not water in your gas? Happened to me twice would run as long as I didn't get on the gas hard.
