'95 3.4 liter V-6 in a '68 F-body?

I bought my daughter a '68 Firebird with no engine or trans. I also bought a 3.4 liter V-6 and automatic transmission out of a totalled '95 Camaro. I know it sounds a little goofy, but she doesn't need 300 hp or 10 mpg. I am planning on keeping the car forever, so value isn't important to me. I can always drop a 350 in it later when she gets tired of the car and wants something more high tech.

Has anybody done a modern engine installation in one of these old cars? The engine has the computer still attached, and I also have the shifter mechanism. I also have the engine mounts and driveshaft yoke.

What are the steps needed to do this install? Can it be done without a professional mechanic getting invloved?

I don't think anyone in the history of car's has put the 3.4 in a classic F-body but I can understand what your thinkinh behind it is but for the love of god replace it with a 350 soon. Also welcome to the Forum Tia.

I have a 96 convertible firebird I converted to a 2000 TA convertible with the 3.4 V6. I know your not looking for performance but the 3.4 stinks when pulling out into traffic. I'm guessing the 68 is heavier than a 96 so that doesn't help much either. I had a 69 350 in a XJ6 Jaguar that would barely bark the tires with intake, roller rockers, carburetor, shift kit and other goodies. It also got 20 mpg's. Had a lot to do with the Jaguar's ratio I'm sure. Because top speed was unbelievable.

Why not throw an old 350 in with a 700R4. Great gas mileage and not very powerful if left stock. Besides the 3.4 has a bad history of giving up after 100K.

He already has the 3.4 though. Youre also going to need to switch the fuel pump over to an electric one for the fuel injectors. This project can be done without a professional mechanic if you have a firm electrical background I should think...and patience.

whats the deal with knockin on the 3.4?? i have a 93 Camaro with the 3.4 and with a little bitof money you can make it run pretty strong.. i've ripped a few 3rd gen firebirds and camaros with 305s and im not even into the engine yet.. if you know what you're doing the 3.4 can be a great engine to work with.. but never would i even think to put it into a first gen Bird...

I wouldn't recommend a 305 TBi for it either but I wasn't knocking the 3.4. I said I understand his reasoning behind it but I think even you can agree if you where picking a powertrain for a muscle car the 3.4 wouldn't be your first choice even though its a good compromise of power/ecomony it doesn't offer the possibility's the 350 does.

step 1:custom engine mounts and redrilling the holes where the transmission crossmember relates to the tranny mount.(ie match up bolt holes(novice)
step 2:custom driveshaft(professional)
step 3:cutting hole for computer wiring harness(hole thru the firewall) (novice).
step 4: wiring it up(i see a later model steering column,and a later model fuse box a requirement for this project(a little know-how)

step 3:Hanging the complete wiring harness and other engine related electrical and emission devices(novice)
step 4:exhaust.Ithink you might run into trouble with the original y-pipe clearing the front end where the engine mounts bolt.this is part of the project i would leave it up to a local professional exhaust company(professional)
Oher things: some if not all safety features may have to be bypassed,such as neutral safetys,and other shift related safety features.besides that the cars dont weigh that much different so you should get just about the same performance out if it in the 68' as you did in the 95'.But the weight of the engine is a factor and you may have to switch to a stiffer set of shocks,and it will sit higher in the front,you may have to get it back level with higher capacity rear springs,or air shocks.other than that i can think of several things that would have to be mounted up like the air cleaner housing and things of that sort.
Its not impossible.heck i dont even think you will need a hammer and a welder for this project.

You will have to buy and install a after market electric fuel pump, and if it were mine i would buy a fuel cell,cause an old rusted tank is not the thing to be hooking to that 3.4.Those little injectors are sensitive to dirty fuel.So are electric fuel pumps.Oh yeah and a in-line fuel filter too...if i missed anything sombody please point it out

you mean the 250 six cyclinder, id say they are hard to find
