Okay, i have a 74 260z. I currently have tripple webbers and a 240 block and heads. I love the old school set up but i am looking to get past the 70's. I want to swap my motor with one of three motors. 280zx turbo motor, 300zx twin turbo motor, or the skyline motor... preferably a gtr. The 280zx turbo swap would be really no problem. Just have to throw it in along with the ecu and harnesses. I already have the zx turbo rear end and transmition in now. I was wondering if anyone had any information about putting the 300zx motor or skyline motor into my car, brackets, transmition, rearend and fabrications that would have to be done. Anything information or advice would be great. Thanks.

im probably betting that alot of fabrication will need to be done to get the rb26 or the vg30de in there. now an rb20det is a little more realsitic. im thinking everything you can possibly think of will need to be custom made.

Re: 260z swap. 280zx turbo/300zx turbo/skyline gtr
Yea RB20DET is WAY more realistic... RB26DETT would be a bitch dude... Dont mess with it, trust me.
RB20DET will work fine. Lot of custom fabrication though. -Wes

Shit, okay. So the RB20DET is the better choice out of the 300zx, but i'm still going to have to fabricate almost everything to get it in the car? If you wouldn't mind explaining the motors to me that'd be great. All i know about are the older model Z's. If you know where i could pick up the parts at would be great. I talked to a guy in town today that said he could get a wrecked 300zx TT for about 1600$ And i could take the drive train out of it. And do you think a skyline motor would be in play at all going into it? Thanks.

Re: 260z swap. 280zx turbo/300zx turbo/skyline gtr
RB20DET = skyline motor, from what i got you thought it was a 300zx motor, but yea much more realistic to put a rb20 in instead of a rb26, even though that would be crazy fast

Re: 260z swap. 280zx turbo/300zx turbo/skyline gtr
Well think about it Tim...
RB20DET is rated at 220bhp, and RB26DETT is rated at 276BHP. Thats not that far off. Tickle that thing up a little bit, and it'll be just as fast, for much cheaper. CA18DET is a thought as well... Fun engine. -Wes

Hmm i gotcha. Would a 300zx motor be easier to put in? I mean.. easier to get parts for, for sure. If anybody has a site, or a big ass book-o-info on this kind of thing. I could build up an old 280zx turbo motor easy, but i want to go more exotic. If someone knows anything about this kind of thing e-mail me or hit me up on Aim so i can ask more questions :-p.

it would probably be more difficult in the lines of the rb26dett...
there is a guy that comes in this forum every once in a while that has a sr20det swapped in his 240z. pretty sweet but i am pretty sure he said he did a lot of cutting and welding. so you have to imagine with the size and weights of the VG30 and RB26, your gonna be doing alot of cutting, welding, reinforcing, etc to that car. almost making it not worth it in the long run.

Re: 260z swap. 280zx turbo/300zx turbo/skyline gtr
Every person I have talked to about putting a VG30DETT into a 240/260/280 said it's worthless. You can get more power for less money from the original L motor, and the weight balance will be less upset.
If anything else, I'd opt for the RB, or the SR20DET.. or even a reworked KA24..
