'96 Blazer I Need Advise and Help

This is what is happening with my '96 Blazer. (1) The truck did not want to start up. I had to use Thrust just to get it started and it ended up getting worse, every time the truck sat too long (more than 3 hours) I had to use Thrust each time to start it up. I replaced the distributor cap and rotor thinking that was the problem. It worked for a few days and started up again. (2)The RPM gage started going crazy, at first it started at 2500 shooting up to 3500 then it got worse, now it just does what it wants at any range. I started feeling the truck kind of jolt and thought my tranny was going out. I took it to the tranny shop and they said it was perfect. I replaced the fuel filter thinking the truck was starving for fuel and ran 3 tanks of 92 octane to see if this would fix it. It started every time with the 92 in it. I decided to put 89 octane fuel (which is what I usually used) in the truck thinking it would be ok, but once the tank of 89 ran through it, it is not starting up again. The truck still jolts once in a while and the RPM gage is still crazy and is driving me nuts. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it may be or what I can replace to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think I would start with a complete tune up, including new Air filter, PCV Valve, plugs, wires and injector cleaner.

You've already replaced the fuel filter, rotor and Distributor cap, now finish the job.

Is your "Check Engine" light coming on?

Yes, there has to be a check engine light associated with this.

Even if it is not on, go to Autozone and have them scan it for stored codes.

Something in the back of my old feeble mind says distributor module and/or spark plug wires.

BUT GO TO AUTOZONE AND HAVE THEM SCAN FOR CODES FIRST BEFORE YOU BUY ANOTHER PART. IF THEY GIVE YOU ANY ERROR CODES BRING THE EXACT CODE NUMBERS BACK AND POST THEM HERE SO WE CAN HELP YOU.

That is the weird thing, there is no check engine light. I will take your advise and go to AutoZone to have it checked out to see if any codes come up. I will let you know what they say. Thank you all for your help, but keep checking this thread I may still need your help.

Well the code finally came up it is the P300 series, it said multiple cylinder missfire. When driving one night we had a (possession happen) light show it looked like we were the highway patrol; lights inside and out flashing. The Light switch was burning hot when the light show happened.....and the fader was not in the fade position as it was all the way bright. The engine was running fine when the light show happened, no cut out or hesitation and the tach was stable and not moving. As for the tach and the sputtering we believe that it may be the distributor itself. We are having it looked at but wanted to find out what anyone else thought.

Thank you
