Suffering from a couple more problems

As if my 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L hasn't given me enough greif, it's going to give me some more. It isn't quitting on me anymore, thank God, but it now seems to be in the habit of idling faster than it should. Before I put this new fuel pump in, it idled at about 200-400 RPMs. It still idles that way most of the time, but 2 times, once Sunday and almost all day today, it is idling at over 1000 RPMs. Is there something that needs adjusting? I've got no check engine light and it doesn't idle that fast all the time. My other problem is that everytime I hit the brakes, no matter how soft or hard, the seatbelt locks. Normally, the seatbelts only lock if you hit the brakes fairly hard, but mine locks up with the slightest pressure on the pedel. In fact, it will lock up even if the brakes don't grab. What's wrong here?

I think disconnecting the battery to put in the pump screwed the computer settings. I think you got to have it reprogramed for about $50.

Re: Suffering from a couple more problems

Didn't you disconnect the battery when you put that pump in?

How can it idle at 200-400 rpm? The idle on these trucks are set at like 750 rpm.

Re: Suffering from a couple more problems

Truck doesn't use any oil, no knock, and i screwed up on the idle speed, it's 400 to about 700 RPMs. Anyway, I didn't disconnect the battery when I changed out the pump (probably stupid, but I forgot). Anyway, today it has been idling fine. It may idle fast again, and if it does, I'll post. What about the seatbelt locking up all the time? It's really annoying.

Re: Suffering from a couple more problems

Oh, by the way, the main problem with the fast idle is that it makes it harder to brake when coming to a stop, because I've got to fight the truck from pushing me.

Re: Suffering from a couple more problems

It's just got so much power!

If it idles fast until the motor is warm, that is normal. If it continues to idle fast even though the motor is up to operating temperature, then that is certainly not normal.

The seatbelt thing you mentioned is actually what it is supposed to do when you hit the brakes. Sometimes these things just don't work, and sometimes they do. I guess yours just started working again.

Re: Suffering from a couple more problems

Well, the first time I noticed the fast idle I had just drove the truck down the highway about 40 minutes, so I know it was up to temp. I don't know about the seatbelt thing. I know they are supposed to lock up when you hit the brakes, but I thought it was usually only a hard braking. Oh well. Oh, I can add something else to my little list. My emergency brake won't work. I can push in the pedal and the brake light comes on, but it has no effect. The cable is hooked up and it seems to move when I hit it. Is there some way to tighten it up?

Re: Suffering from a couple more problems

Disconnect the battery first or put it on a scanner to see what's going on. I'm kind of thinking that putting that new pump in without resetting everything is what did it.

That Haynes manual you have should show you how to tighten up your emergency brake. I don't know how because I've never had to do it on these trucks. I think it would be fairly easy.

Re: Suffering from a couple more problems

For the E brake, trace the cable from either the pedal or the rear brakes. Somewhere along its length you should find some sort of swivel, which is where you'd adjust it.

Re: Suffering from a couple more problems

Yea I read how to adjust the e-brake right after posting about it on here. My RPMs seem to be staying the same now. It hasn't changed in 2 days. I think all is well.
