Fuel Display Problems

This is for a 2001 Montero.

The fuel display is no longer accurate on the center console. I first noticed that it was off by a decimal place. So if I had 150 miles to empty it would show 15. Now I can't make any sense of how the numbers are calculated. But yesterday it was displaying 0 and I had 1/2 a tank.

Any ideas of how to fix that???

Thanks!

I know that it takes a small resistance in the float circuit to show a reading on your gage. An open circuit/infinite resistance shows zero.
You might check the single wire connection near the tank. With the fuel punp, you probably have more than one wire?
