Front axle seal replacement

I had my 2001 Jimmy 4X4 in for an oil change and was told that the driver's side front axle seal is leaking. I have noticed what I thought was engine oil drops on the driveway under the front driver's side. Does this sound right? How does one replace the seal?

Re: Front axle seal replacement

Let a shop change it if it is leaking badly and also monitor the front diff fluid level.

I am thinking you are not even changing your own oil so I think this job is way over your skill level and better left to a trained professional.

Re: Front axle seal replacement

I usually do my own oil changes but just moved and the garage is still half full of boxes. I just wanted a second opinion from the experts here. This forum has saved me lots of grief in the past just as a reader. This is my first post and I would like some tips on changing the seal. Thanks

Wink Easy

Just got through doing mine, a '98. I'm not sure what the front drive axle on a 2001 looks like but if the axle bolts to a flange the job should be easy. The part from the dealer was less then $10.00.
Good luck. Bobcat.

Re: Front axle seal replacement

Thanks BobcatAZ. I'll get the part and hope that I don't run into any surprizes. I was hoping someone might be able to give me a step-by-step. I'm not a mechanic but I can twist a wrench. Thanks again.

Re: Front axle seal replacement

You need to go out and purchase a haynes repair manual that will walk you through the whole job.

The book is US$15 and will save you 1000s.

Re: Front axle seal replacement

Thanks BlazerLt. I've got one for my Wing and it's about time I did the same for "the Beast".

Yip, man, it has saved me literally thousands of dollars.

Also, I recommend getting the Chilton's as well.

Why you say? Well, if one is a little lean on the details, the other most of the time will fill in the grey areas on a certain repair.

I agree with BlazerLT. Get both books. They are both lame in certain areas. The two are cheaper then the Factory OEM Books.
