2000 F-250 Wont Start When cold
Hey I had a question for everyone. I have a 2000 ford f-250 that doesnt start when its cold. I have changed the glow plugs and some relays but that didnt do it. Its diesel and a 5 speed manual by the way and it will only start if its been plugged in for a while on the block heater. Does anbody what could cause that?

Well I beleive the batterys are fine because it does turn over and turns over pretty strong. The only time It will start is if I roll start it. I live on a hill and the truck is manual. Even then it sometimes doesnt start on the first try. Im not sure what the problem is. The wait to start comes on like normal and I belive the glow plugs heat up fine. Is there anything else involved in starting it.

Ahh, the WTS light does NOT mean that the glow plugs ARE working, only that the computer has commanded them on. There is a relay on the right side of the engine next to the fuel filter housing. Replace it. It switches the glow plugs on, and they can fail, so the WTS light is on, but not the glow plugs.

Well I changed that Glow plug relay it was about 78 dollars. That didnt fix it unfortunately. Any other clues. Its really becoming a pain now since its becoming cold here in Colorado.

Is it cold enough yet for your fuel to gel? I lived in CO for 7 yrs... knew several people w/Ford diesels & they all plugged them in religiously at night during winter. *lol* I even installed a block heater on my roommate's p.o.s. '83 Honda Accord hb & it started w/o a prob afterwards!

Well, check the fuse, and see if you have voltage going from the glow plug relay out, if you do, check the wiring harness.

I Had A Problem Like You Are Describing And After Properly Checking Both Batteries I Found That I Had One Weak Batt.
Replaced With Two New Ones Been Happier Since.

Had the exact problem on my 2000...Took it in to the dealership, said I had the wrong oil in it...BS, I know I put the same oil as my bro-in-law, and his starts right up...(Dealership said it was foaming)...Got it back, still hard to start...Colder it got the worse it got. Took it to another dealership, said it was batts. They wanted 208 ea. took them two new 920 CCA batts. for 140.00 out the door, still hard to start...Initally it would take 12-15 secs. to start, let it run for 10 sec. shut off, and it would fire right up....
All it was, was a 2.00 part...The o-ring for the pick-up tube, half of it was gone, sucking air, and causing the oil to foam...It was loosing it's prime...Try this, once you get it started, shut it off, after ten sec., if it starts right up, then do this: (This is what the 2nd dealership did per work order) Over fill oil 3 qts, then jack up the rear 12 inches...If it starts up, and runs rough, check oil resivoir for aireated suspect... If your problem was the same is mine, you'll have to remove the engine, and order a new oil pan, cause you will have to chisel the old one off...(Make sure you use the right adhisive, or the oil pan will leak...DON'T USE SILICONE!!!!) The first dealership really screwed me...35 miles after I picked it up, the clutch completly expolded, ripped off 5 teeth off the clutch...(Took the clutch to two different trans shops, and both said they never seen anything like it, except a pulling tractor...) Then when I dropped the trans, it was BONE dry of fliud...I complained BIG time, they said they didn't do ANYTHING with the trans, they didn't remove it, or drain it...I told them, that on "there" work order, it staited they removed the trans...There responce "Well, we only put that we removed the trans so we get full rate from Ford, If we only say we removed the engine, we only get half rate from Ford"...Called Ford customer service, told them that they were screwing them, as well as me, so the dealership is being investigated...Don't know if I'll get any of my money back, but at least they are in hot water...Sorry for venting, it happened back in Oct, and I'm still ticked...Cost me over 1500.00...They saw the oil was foaming, and assumed I put the wrong oil in it, they didn't even check if something else was causing it... Let me know how it works out...
