headlights are out

Both of my headlights on my '97 Sunfire GT went out at the same time. My day time running lights still work and my fog/parking lights also work. I checked my fuses and they are fine. When I have my lights on, and I put my car in gear, my day time running lights indicator on the dash is displayed. Does anyone have any ideas for me to try?

have you looked through the forum at all? there are many posts in the sunfire forum on healights.....

but for now ....it could be one of many problems....
1. fuses..ya i know you checked them...
2. relay ..under the hood on the left hand side (if you are standing looking at the car) you'll see it..follow the wires...
3. combi switch...(inside your car, the one that you use to switch the headlights on with, high beams, etc) it could either be sticky, could be a loose connection, could be blown altogether...'fires are known for that
4. could be a broken or loose connection in the wires all the way from the headlights right up to the firewall..you gotta look closely...

but for now that is all i have....otherwise check into the forums a little closer...you'll see...we've all had some kind of headlight problem....

hope its not the combi switch, they can be pretty expensive to change, unless ya do it yourself...i had to have mine changed and the damn thing still doesnt work properly, i gotta tap it whenever the lights decide to just go out (usually in front of a cop too )

Have you tried removing your wiring harness and checking to see if GM installed yours with Duct tape like they did with the 2000 and 2001 Sunfires?

It's not that difficult to remove the wiring harness, it unplugs from underneath the battery holder and basically follows under the washer jug (which you will have to remove) and then goes across to the other side of the car along the rad. Check for corrosion (and duct tape of course) and simply replace the tape if there's no corrosion, and if there is, just cut the wire about a half inch on either side, and replace the piece you cut out with 2 inches of NEW wire, tape up securely and put it all back together.

Seriously, it's not as bad as it sounds, a little common sense and some electrical tape and wire cutters and you'll have your headlights working perfectly in no time.

We gotta get GM to do a recall if we want some semblance of security driving at night!
